Can I Take Tylenol Arthritis With Xarelto

Is It Safe To Take Tylenol Daily For Arthritis Pain

Can I take Tylenol & Advil Together? All You Need to Know! Giveaway!

Question: I suffer from osteoarthritis. My doctor says I should keep exercising even though my joints hurt. He says its okay for me to take a pain medication like Tylenol in order to remain active. But Ive read that Tylenol can damage my liver. What am I to do?

Answer: You are right to be concerned about medication safety. But your doctors also right that you need to be physically active. So how do you balance these seemingly competing objectives?

I posed your question to two specialists at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre: One is a surgeon who performs joint replacement operations and the other is an expert in drug safety.

Lets start with the surgeon. Dr. Jeffery Gollish, Medical Director of Sunnybrooks Holland Orthopaedic and Arthritic Centre, says he sees lots of people who feel the same way you do.

Many patients, he says, fear that exercise will lead to additional damage of their joints. The fact that it hurts when they move is taken as a sign that they are doing harm to themselves. And they worry medications that mask their pain will simply allow them to do even more harm.

The issues of exercise and medication are two areas where the public has misconceptions, says Dr. Gollish. They think both are harmful. In fact, both are beneficial.

Exercise, in general, is good and wont harm the joints. The only thing we tell people to stop doing is running and avoiding any impact activity.

Conditions Treated By Acetaminophen Vs Ibuprofen

Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are both effective pain relievers that are FDA-approved to treat mild to moderate pain and fever. Examples of mild to moderate pain include headaches, back pain, toothaches, muscle aches, sprains, and menstrual cramps.

Acetaminophen is only indicated for the temporary treatment of pain and fever. However, it also has off-label uses for arthritis, migraines, and dysmenorrhea . Acetaminophen may not be as effective as other drugs for these off-label uses.

Ibuprofen can be used to treat general acute pain and fever. It is also labeled to treat pain and inflammation from arthritis, migraines, and dysmenorrhea.

Research has also shown that acetaminophen and ibuprofen can be used to treat patent ductus arteriosus in preterm infants. The ductus arteriosus is a major blood vessel in the infant heart that normally closes after birth. However, in some babies, this blood vessel remains open and can cause heart complications. NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen have been used to treat patent ductus arteriosus.

Dosage For People With Kidney Problems

Before prescribing Xarelto for you, your doctor will check to see how well your kidneys are working. This allows your doctor to know whether youll need renal dosing of Xarelto. Renal dosing is a reduced dose of the drug thats typically determined by calculating your creatinine clearance.

Creatinine is a waste product thats produced by your body. Your kidneys filter creatinine out of your blood, and it exits your body through your urine. Measuring the amount of creatinine in your urine allows doctors to see how well your kidneys are working.

Usually, your doctor wont prescribe Xarelto for you to treat or prevent a DVT or PE if your creatinine clearance is lower than 15 mL/min.

However, Xarelto can be used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke if you have kidney problems, no matter how low your creatinine clearance is. In this case, it can also be used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other complications from blood clots.

If you have A-fib and your creatinine clearance is 50 mL/min or less, youll need a dose reduction of the drug. In this case, the recommended dosage of Xarelto is 15 mg taken once every evening.

Is Having One Or Two Drinks Ok

Its usually safe to have one or two drinks around the same time that you take an occasional dose of acetaminophen. Most people are fine taking acetaminophen and alcohol together as long as they take typical doses of acetaminophen and only combine them every once in a while.

If you are considering combining these substances, its best to do so only if youve been drinking a moderate amount of alcohol people assigned male at birth should have two drinks or less per day, and people assigned female at birth should have one drink or less per day.

Some people may need to be more careful, though, as they may be more likely to experience liver damage when mixing the two.

How Can I Stop Bleeding If I Have A Bleed While Im Taking Xarelto

While youre taking Xarelto, you can usually stop any minor bleeding you may have with basic first aid techniques. For example, if you get a cut, apply pressure to the area with a clean cloth for about 10 minutes. And if possible, lie down and raise the cut above the level of your heart.

If you get a nosebleed, pinch your nose just above your nostrils for about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, lean forward and breathe through your mouth.

However, if you have severe bleeding, you should call 911. Be sure to get emergency medical help for bleeding that:

  • seems very excessive
  • doesnt stop after 10 minutes of applying pressure
  • is caused by a serious injury or trauma to your head
  • is coming from wounds that may need stitches
  • is coming from wounds that may have a foreign body stuck inside

Its also possible to have internal bleeding while youre taking Xarelto. See the Xarelto side effects section above for details on possible symptoms of internal bleeding. If you have any symptoms of internal bleeding while taking Xarelto, call your doctor right away. But if your symptoms feel life threatening, call 911.

If you have severe or life threatening bleeding, you may need an antidote to Xarelto. For more information about reversing the effects of Xarelto, see the Reversal of Xarelto section below.

Is Acetaminophen Or Ibuprofen Better

Ibuprofen is more effective than acetaminophen for treating inflammation and chronic pain conditions. Ibuprofen is FDA-approved to treat osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis whereas acetaminophen may be used off-label for these conditions. However, acetaminophen is generally more tolerable than ibuprofen in regards to side effects.

Xarelto For Reducing The Risk Of Stroke And Blood Clots In People With A

Xarelto is FDA-approved to reduce the risk of strokes and blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation thats not caused by a heart valve problem.

A-fib is a type of irregular heartbeat. It can disrupt the flow of blood around your body and increase your risk of having a blood clot. Blood clots can sometimes be dangerous. For example, a blood clot that travels to your brain can cause a stroke.

Xarelto is an anticoagulant . It lowers your risk of having strokes and blood clots.

Effectiveness for reducing the risk of stroke and blood clots in people with A-fib

One clinical study found Xarelto was as effective as warfarin in preventing stroke and blood clots in people with A-fib.

In this study, 3.8% of people taking Xarelto had a stroke or blood clot. In comparison, 4.3% of patients taking warfarin had a stroke or blood clot.

What Happens With Blood Clots

Blood clots form when certain blood cells and other substances stick together. If a blood clot forms inside one of your arteries, it can travel in your bloodstream to your heart or brain. Once there, the clot can cause a heart attack or stroke.

Blood clots can also form in the veins deep inside your body. These types of clots are called deep vein thrombosis . If these clots break loose, they can travel in your bloodstream and block blood flow to your lungs. This condition is called a pulmonary embolism .

Your risk of getting dangerous blood clots is increased by certain conditions and situations, such as:

  • having a type of irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation
  • having coronary artery disease with CAD, the arteries in your heart are narrowed
  • having peripheral artery disease with PAD, the arteries in your legs are narrowed
  • a history of DVT
  • staying in a hospital or not being able to move around much after leaving a hospital this risk is particularly important if you:
  • are 75 years of age or older
  • are overweight
  • have a history of either cancer or heart failure
  • having hip or knee replacement surgery
  • In all of these situations, your blood is prevented from flowing freely around your body. When this happens, your platelets can start clumping together inside your blood vessels. Platelets produce substances that activate clotting factors in your blood. When activated, clotting factors lead to the formation of blood clots.

Will I Need To Use This Drug Long Term

Can I Take Tylenol and Advil Together?

You might, but it depends on why youre taking Xarelto. The length of time Xarelto treatment is used is based on why youre taking the drug. Typical treatment lengths are as follows:

    • If youre taking Xarelto after having a knee replacement, youll take the drug for 12 days after your surgery.
    • If youre taking Xarelto after having a hip replacement, youll take the drug for 35 days after your surgery.
    • If youre taking Xarelto because you were admitted to a hospital for an acute illness, youll take the drug for 31 to 39 days.
    • If youre taking Xarelto to treat a deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism , youll take the drug for 6 to 12 months.

However, when its prescribed to prevent blood clots or their complications, Xarelto is meant to be used as a long-term treatment. If you and your doctor determine that Xarelto is safe and effective for you, youll likely take it long term for these purposes.

If you have coronary artery disease or peripheral artery disease , youll take Xarelto with aspirin.

With CAD, you have narrowed arteries in your heart. With PAD, you have narrowed arteries in your legs. Both of these conditions increase your risk of having blood clots that can cause a heart attack or stroke.

Using a combination of Xarelto and aspirin is more effective for preventing heart attack and stroke in people with CAD or PAD than using aspirin alone.

The recommended dosage of aspirin for this use is 75 mg to 100 mg taken once a day.

    What Does Xarelto Do

Xarelto is a type of drug called a direct-acting anticoagulant . It works by attaching to the activated blood clotting factor called factor Xa. When Xarelto attaches to factor Xa, it stops the clotting factor from working. This makes your blood less able to form clots.

Xarelto is used to both treat and prevent certain types of clots. When you take Xarelto to treat a DVT or PE that you already have, the drug stops these clots from getting bigger. This allows your body to dissolve the clots naturally.

Is Acetaminophen Or Ibuprofen More Effective

Acetaminophen and ibuprofen may have differences in effectiveness when treating fever and different types of pain. They are both usually taken multiple times throughout the day for maximum symptom relief.

In one review, ibuprofen was found to be similar or better than acetaminophen for treating pain and fever in adults and children. Both drugs were also found to be equally safe. This review included 85 different studies in adults and children.

When it comes to chronic pain conditions, ibuprofen has been shown to be more effective. In one study, ibuprofen was found to be more effective than acetaminophen for treating pain from recurring migraines and osteoarthritis. Another study concluded similar results and found that paracetamol had better pain relief and tolerability than acetaminophen for osteoarthritis.

Because both drugs work in different ways, one may be preferred over the other for different conditions. Pain is also subjective and dependent on a persons pain tolerance. Therefore, pain relief may differ based on a persons response to medication. It is best to seek medical advice from a healthcare professional if you experience pain or fever.

MONDAY, April 14, 2014 — People taking blood thinners to prevent clots in their legs or lungs may put themselves at risk for serious internal bleeding if they also take common painkillers such as aspirin or ibuprofen, researchers warn.

These over-the-counter painkillers — called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs — include such drugs as Advil, Aleve, Bufferin, Excedrin, Motrin and Nuprin, as well as aspirin. Patients who use blood thinners such as warfarin, Eliquis, Xarelto or Pradaxa should not take them, the researchers said.

“If you are taking an NSAID while taking an anticoagulant, your risk of a major bleed is double what it would be if you weren’t taking an NSAID,” said lead researcher Dr. Bruce Davidson. He’s with the division of pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.

One-quarter of these major bleeds happen within eight days of taking an NSAID, Davidson said. “It’s not like you have to be taking them for weeks or months. Some bleeds happen with a single dose,” he said.

The risk of bleeding might be even greater for people with an irregular heartbeat, called atrial fibrillation, who take a blood thinner and use an NSAID, Davidson said.

“The message for people is if you’re taking a blood thinner, do not take an NSAID — just don’t take one,” Davidson said.

“If you have a headache or aching muscles or joints, take generic Tylenol . Don’t take NSAIDs for casual use,” he added.

Warfarin Use Linked With Increased Risk Of Knee And Hip Replacement In People With Osteoarthritis Data Suggests

bootcampchicagocity1 Because my life is fascinating

A new study found that warfarin , a medication that is commonly prescribed for atrial fibrillation, is associated with a significantly greater risk of knee and hip replacements in people with osteoarthritis . The research is to be presented on Saturday, November 7, 2020, at the ACR Convergence, the American College of Rheumatologys annual meeting.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and involves the entire joint, including the cartilage, joint lining, ligaments, and bone. Its usually found in the hands, hips, and knees, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . If medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes arent effective, OA can require joint replacement.

What Are The Typical Side Effects

Unfortunately, it can be hard to tell when you first start having liver problems because the symptoms are pretty vague. They can also be similar to what people experience when drinking alcohol.

Symptoms of early liver damage from acetaminophen include:

    • Nausea or vomiting

    • Fatigue

    • Feeling generally unwell

The liver is often good at bouncing back, so these side effects are usually temporary. The important thing is avoiding other substances that are tough on the liver as much as possible this will give the liver time to heal and repair itself.

Are There Any Serious Side Effects Or Risks

Severe liver injury from occasionally mixing alcohol with lower doses of acetaminophen is rare. But its good to recognize the symptoms in case you or someone you know needs urgent medical care.

Symptoms of severe liver damage include:

    • Yellowing of the skin and eyes

    • Abdominal pain or swelling

    • Abnormal bleeding or bruising

When Can I Start Taking Tylenol After Ive Stopped Drinking

You may also be wondering if you can take acetaminophen after having a few drinks. For example, acetaminophen can really help with some symptoms of a hangover. Generally speaking, if youve had alcohol recently, its OK to take acetaminophen as long as its the recommended dose and you dont do it too often.

One study looked at whether acetaminophen was safe in people who stopped drinking alcohol after recent heavy use. Study participants took either 4,000 mg of acetaminophen per day or a placebo a pill with no medication in it for 3 days. The acetaminophen group experienced no liver damage during the study.

This suggests acetaminophen use after drinking alcohol is safe for most people. Be sure to discuss your risks with your healthcare provider, especially if you are one of the higher-risk groups of people discussed earlier or if you take acetaminophen every day.
