What The Experts Say
It is advised to look at the ingredients list of a cream to see if it is formulated with topical anesthetics which can help numb the affected area and lessen pain. If you are someone with extremely sensitive skin, it may be beneficial to look for an arthritis cream that caters to sensitive skin and is less irritative. The side effects list can show you what symptoms you may be subjected to after using the cream. If you already suffer from any of those conditions, it is advised to consult your doctor prior to use. Is Icy Hot Effective At Relieving Back Pain
Is Icy Hot Effective At Relieving Back Pain?
Icy Hot is one of the most popular pain-relieving brands in the world today, selling over $270 million worth of products each year. The brand offers a wide variety of creams, sleeves, sprays and patches that claim to dull your pain by cooling down the affected area and then relax it away through heating properties.
With their steady popularity, Icy Hot and similar topical products have piqued the interest of people who struggle from frequent back pain. Icy Hot has even created some commercials that target that demographic specifically.
But do the actual benefits of the product really live up to all the marketing hype?
In this unbiased, clinical review, were going to look at the research and science behind Icy Hot and determine if it actually has any merit for people who deal with back pain.
First off, lets begin by determining exactly what IcyHot is.
How Is Voltaren Different From Aleve
Voltaren works similarly to oral NSAIDs like naproxen by temporarily blocking the production of pain-signaling chemicals called prostaglandins. However, when taking a pill, the medication is distributed to the site of pain through the bloodstream. Voltaren works by penetrating deep through your skin to deliver medicine at the site of arthritis pain.
Voltaren is an alternative to oral analgesics such as Aleve. It targets pain directly at the source to deliver nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicine for powerful arthritis pain relief. Its the first full prescription strength nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory gel now available over the counter. And, Voltaren is FDA approved to be used 2x longer than Aleve*
*21 days vs 10 days for Aleve before consulting a doctor.

How Arthritis Creams Work
Arthritis creams help relieve joint pain when applied to the skin. They can provide short-term but effective relief. These creams tend to work best on joints that are close to the surface of the skin, such as the joints in the hands or knees.
The main pain relieving ingredients in arthritis creams are:
- salicylates
- cinnamon oil
These substances are called counterirritants. They warm or cool the skin and distract the brain from pain.
Capsaicin is a natural, odor-free element found in hot chili peppers. It reduces pain by blocking the skins pain receptors.
The arthritis creams most commonly found in drugstores include:
What Is Icy Hot

Icy Hot products are made up of a combination of active ingredients including menthol, methyl salicylate, and capsaicin . Menthol and methyl salicylate cool the skin and then capsaicin irritates it on a minor level, causing it to feel warm.
The exact dosage of the chemicals depends on the product you purchase varying anywhere from 2.5% menthol to 30% methyl salicylate. Typically, the stronger the relief, the higher the concentration of menthol and methyl salicylate.

Looking for a natural way to get your joints moving in the morning? Close the medicine cabinet and try an age-old remedy that has stood the test of time: heat.
If you have a chronic condition like fibromyalgia, arthritis, or lower back pain, try heating things up. Soaking in warm water or applying a heated compress is one of the oldest, cheapest, and safest forms of complementary therapy. Research has shown that heat treatments can loosen stiff joints and relieve achy muscles.
Here is how it works. When you warm up a sore joint or tired muscle, your blood vessels get bigger. This allows more blood, oxygen, and nutrients to be delivered to the injured tissues. Better circulation means more relaxation for those stiff muscles and joints.
Stay away from heat if you have an acute injury or are having a flare. If you have a sudden onset of swelling and redness from overdoing it yesterday, you are better off using cold treatments for a few days. Cold has the opposite effect of heat: it reduces blood flow and decreases inflammation.
Here are a few simple ways to heat up your daily routine.

Icy Hot Is One Of My Favorite Staples
Since I strained my hip, I’ve kept some Icy Hot Pain Relieving Cream available to help me feel as comfortable as possible while I healed. It feels just like its name suggests. It’s a hot and cool sensation that REALLY does soothe sore muscles and takes away the ache.It does what it advertises unlike many other products on the market.I still use it when needed for daily aches and pains after exercise. It’s served me well, so well in fact that my oldest son has taken my advice and come to use it after a day of heavy lifting at work. I can honestly say that I see the difference in him on the days where he remembers to use it versus the days he “forgets”.I would, , suggest Icy Hot Pain Relieving Cream to anyone I know who might be experiencing body aches and pains, be the person working to heal from a larger muscle strain, or just experiencing an achy body day. It real works well.

What About Prescription Vs Otc Arthritis Creams
Prescription creams typically come in stronger concentrations than OTC versions and are made with NSAIDs . NSAIDs are usually taken by mouth to relieve arthritis pain, but they can cause stomach upset, bleeding, or ulcers, as well as heart, liver, or kidney problems. With topically applied NSAIDs, the risk of such side effects is lower, says Dr. Owensby. Thats because topical NSAIDs work locally, on the application site, and dont really get absorbed in your system like oral versions, he explains.
Cochrane reviews suggest some topical NSAIDs work as well as their oral counterparts for knee and hand OA.
If you have mild OA in a joint thats close to the skin, especially in your knee or hand, your doctor may prescribe topical NSAIDs, says Dr. Owensby. They may also be used for older people or those who cant tolerate oral NSAIDs. One topical NSAID currently available is called Voltaren, which contains the prescription NSAID diclofenac. Talk to your doctor to see if a topical NSAIDs is right for you, and how to use it safely.
