How Are Enbrel And Humira Alike And Different
Both Enbrel and Humira are biologic medications. Biologic medications are made from living cells. Enbrel and Humira are also both injections. And they work by lowering the activity of your immune system.
These two drugs target the same part of your immune system. They both block the activity of a protein called tumor necrosis factor .
These drugs also share the same side effects. And both have for serious infections and cancer. Boxed warnings alert people to serious side effects of a drug. These are the most serious warnings about a drugs side effects.
Both Enbrel and Humira can be used to treat:
Doctors can prescribe Enbrel for adults and some children with plaque psoriasis. But Humira can only be used to treat plaque psoriasis in adults.
If youd like to know more about the differences and similarities of these two drugs, talk with your doctor.
What Is Enbrels Dosage
Enbrel is a medication thats given by subcutaneous injection . The drug comes in several forms and strengths.
When you first start Enbrel, you may receive Enbrel injections at your doctors office. Then theyll show you how to give yourself injections at home. You can also ask your pharmacist to show you how to use Enbrel.
What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis
Arthritis is a general term for inflammation in joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of chronic arthritis that occurs in joints on both sides of the body , which helps distinguish it from other types of arthritis.
In addition to affecting the joints, rheumatoid arthritis may occasionally affect other parts of the body, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart, blood, nerves, or kidneys.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, meaning that patients immune system is overreacting against itself. The result can cause some or all of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

When Will Enbrel Be Available In Generic Form
There is no generic version of Enbrel on the market now. Some biosimilar alternatives have been approved in the last few years. These biosimilars, Erelzi and Eticovo, may end up being around 15% to 30% less expensive than Enbrel. They should come to market after patent issues are resolved. The timing for that is uncertain, but pharma industry executives say that Erelzi likely wont be available in the U.S. until 2029.
Biologic Treatments For Rheumatoid Arthritis: Anti
Biologic treatments are antibodies which are designed to destroy or limit key proteins and cells that drive RA. There are several different types of biological treatments for RA including:
- anti-T cell
You can listen to, watch or read Professor Robert Moots introduction to biologic treatments.
Anti-TNF and B-cell treatmentsSome of the people we interviewed were currently on the ‘biological’ drugs and others were considering it. In those who were using it their quality of life had improved – less inflammation and stiffness, less fatigue and in some cases less pain, so giving them greater mobility, energy and strength. Some people said they had had only minor flare ups of their RA since starting anti-TNF.

Can I Use Nsaids Together With Enbrel To Treat Psoriatic Arthritis
As long as your doctor approves, its safe to take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs with Enbrel. There arent any known drug interactions between Enbrel and NSAIDs.
When taken for psoriatic arthritis, NSAIDs may help relieve joint swelling and morning stiffness, and they may help improve joint range of motion. Examples of NSAIDs include:
Although many NSAIDs are available over the counter, its very important that you dont take these medications with Enbrel without first talking with your doctor. Your doctor can work with you to determine the best treatments for your psoriatic arthritis.
Molecular Structure And Mode Of Action
Etanercept is a dimeric human tumor necrosis factor receptor p75-Fc fusion protein made of 2 extra-cellular domains of the human 75 kD TNFR linked by the constant Fc portion of human immunoglobulin 1 . Etanercept is produced by recombinant DNA technology in Chinese hamster ovary mammalian cell expression system. It consists of 934 amino acids and has an approximate molecular weight of 150 kD.
TNF is a naturally occurring cytokine produced primarily by activated macrophages and T cells and exists predominantly as a trimer . Two distinct receptors for TNF exist naturally as monomeric molecules on cell surfaces and in soluble forms. One is a 55 kD protein and the other has a molecular weight of 75 kD . The biological activity of TNF is dependent upon binding to either cell surface TNFR. Monomers of the extracellular portion of the TNFRs naturally cleaved from the cell surface are termed soluble TNF receptors . sTNFRs bind with high affinity to circulating TNF and act as natural antagonists to TNF preventing the TNF molecules from binding to cell-bound receptors.
The dimeric structure of ETN enhances its binding affinity and provides substantially greater competitive inhibition of TNF than monomeric soluble receptors. Use of an IgG Fc region as a fusion element in this construction imparts a longer serum half-life compared with monomeric soluble receptors.

What Is The New Drug Used To Treat
Erelzi is given by injection. It can be used to treat the same diseases as Enbrel. That includes:
- Moderate to severe RA, either on its own or in combination with the drug methotrexate
- Moderate to severe juvenile arthritis in patients over the age of 2
- Psoriatic arthritis in combination with methotrexate in patients who donât respond to that drug by itself
- Moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in patients over the age of 18
Efficacy Of Etanercept In Psoriatic Arthritis
Etanercept has also been shown to be effective in psoriatic arthritis . In this12 week randomized, double blind controlled trial, 60 patients with PsA and psoriasis were studied for efficacy and safety of ETN or placebo. The PsA outcome measures included the proportion of patients who met the Psoriatic Arthritis Response Criteria and those who met the ACR20 response criteria. Psoriasis endpoints included improvement in the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index and improvement in prospectively identified individual target lesions. Eighty seven percent of ETN-treated patients met the PsARC compared with 23% of placebo-controlled patients. The ACR20 was achieved by 73% of ETN-treated patients compared with 13% of placebo-treated patients. Of the 19 patients in each treatment group who could be assessed for psoriasis , five of ETN-treated patients achieved a 75% improvement in the PASI, compared with none of the placebo-treated patients . The median PASI improvement was 46% in ETN-treated patients versus 9% in placebo treated patients similarly, median target lesion improvements were 50% and 0, respectively.

Pain Management For Rheumatoid Arthritis
Treating pain and discomfort related to RA won’t stop the progression of disease, but it can help you live more comfortably.
While DMARDs slow disease progression and reduce inflammation, they’re not used to treat acute pain management. Instead, doctors typically recommend nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , such as Aleve and prescription Diflunisal , and, for a brief duration, corticosteroids, such as prednisone and prednisolone.
Medical marijuana is frequently prescribed for chronic pain, but the research is lacking when it comes to treating RA pain. It’s generally a matter of weighing the benefits and risks of medical marijuana for RA it does reduce pain and has anti-inflammatory effects, but some doctors hesitate to prescribe it for rheumatic conditions because of the mental and cardiac-related side effects.

For which conditions is Enbrel approved for? Enbrel is approved for use in adults who have been diagnosed with the following inflammatory conditions: moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis psoriatic arthritis ankylosing spondylitis chronic moderate to severe psoriasis. Enbrel can be used alone or with a medicine called methotrexate and in patients who have not responded well to methotrexate alone.
What is the mechanism of action? Enbrel is a medicine called a tumor necrosis factor blocker. These drugs can help treat inflammatory conditions by reducing inflammation and stopping disease progression. They work by blocking TNF, a chemical produced by the immune system that causes inflammation. TNF is present in higher levels in people with inflammatory conditions, which leads to more inflammation and symptoms.
How is Enbrel typically given ? Enbrel is given by an injection under the skin. You can learn how to give the injection yourself or have someone help you.
How are patients typically monitored? Enbrel affects your immune system, which can increase your risk for infection. During treatment with Enbrel, your doctor will monitor you for infections, including blood poisoning and tuberculosis . If you develop an infection, your doctor will treat the infection with medication. If the infection is serious, you may have to stop taking Enbrel.

Enbrel For Polyarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
Enbrel is also approved to treat moderate to severe polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis in children ages 2 years and older.
Polyarticular JIA is a type of arthritis that occurs in people younger than 18 years old. It causes swelling and pain in five or more joints. Its not known what causes polyarticular JIA.
Although polyarticular JIA may cause pain in any joint, the most commonly affected areas are small joints in the fingers and hands.
Enbrel works by decreasing the swelling in joints. This helps make it easier and less painful for children with polyarticular JIA to move their affected joints.
In clinical trials of children ages 2 to 17 years old with polyarticular JIA, 74% saw a decrease in symptoms after 3 months of taking Enbrel. After 3 months, children were split into two groups: those who continued to take Enbrel and those who started taking a placebo .
In the second part of the trial, about 77% of children taking a placebo had an arthritis flare-up. In comparison, 24% of children taking Enbrel had a flare-up. Children taking Enbrel didnt have their first flare-up of symptoms until at least 116 days after starting treatment. Children taking a placebo had their first flare-up 28 days after starting treatment.
How Do You Treat Rheumatoid Arthritis
Typically, RA is first treated with a group of medications called disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs , the most common of which is . If DMARDs like methotrexate arent working well enough on their own, providers will either add on or change to a different medication. The next step is usually a different type of DMARD called a biologic or a similar medication that targets a specific part of your immune system.
While biologic medications, such as and , are common choices and have been around for almost 20 years, a newer medication named is also a possible option.
As Xeljanz has become more well-known among people with RA, some are questioning if this oral tablet is safer or more effective than the injectable options. More on this next.

Nutritional Supplements And Dietary Changes
There’s no strong evidence to suggest that specific dietary changes can improve rheumatoid arthritis, although some people with rheumatoid arthritis feel their symptoms get worse after they have eaten certain foods.
If you think this may be the case for you, it may be useful to try avoiding problematic foods for a few weeks to see if your symptoms improve.
But it’s important to ensure your overall diet is still healthy and balanced. A Mediterranean-style diet, which is based on vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, beans, cereals, grains, fish and unsaturated fats such as olive oil, is recommended.
There’s also little evidence supporting the use of supplements in rheumatoid arthritis, although some can be useful in preventing side effects of medicines you may be taking.
There’s some evidence to suggest that taking fish oil supplements may help reduce joint pain and stiffness caused by rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid Arthritis And Diet Considerations
When it comes to the connection between diet and rheumatoid arthritis improvement, much of the scientific evidence is inconclusive, and the clinical studies haven’t been very large. But some people claim that certain dietary modifications have helped relieve their RA symptoms. It’s important to check with your doctor before you make any significant changes to your dietary habits.

I’m on Benepali which is a bio similar of Enbrel. I have been on it 5 weeks, but I noticed a difference almost immediately. It said 2-12 weeks to work, but it definitely started to work quicker.
This is the first time all year I’ve not been on steroids and been pain free!
Good luck with yours. I hope this continues for both of us!

Hi and thank you for your response. I think the reason I was sort of shocked by this almost immediate reaction to enbrel was because previously I had tried Humira and this can take weeks to have any effect. It actually had no effect for me hence being put on the enbrel which I am glad to say does seem to be working for me!
I’m glad it’s working for you too. And no side effects either. Bonus. Injection day tomorrow. Looking forward to it. No prednisolone either somy weight is steadily coming back down. Happy days. Thanks again for your reply.
Are There Alternative Drugs In The Class
If youre paying out of pocket, Enbrel will cost you less than another popular arthritis drug, Humira, but more than several other TNF blockers Avsola, Remicade, Inflectra, Renflexis, Cimzia, and Simponi. Talk to your healthcare provider about how you might bring your medication costs down by using one of these instead of Enbrel.
