I have rheumatoid arthritis, but I dont have chronic joint pain thanks to regular exercise and a strict anti-inflammatory diet. When I say strict, I mean a whole foods diet with no dairy, no processed sugars, no animal proteins, no oils, and no alcohol. A lot of people tell me they couldnt do what I do, but for me, eating a restricted diet beats the heck out of being in pain every day.

It took me years to get to this point. When I was initially diagnosed in 2006, my doctor told me I would have to take an RA drug like methotrexate for the rest of my life. Taking such powerful drugs seemed scaryand frankly, counterintuitive to meand I refused them. I tried to relieve my symptoms with diet and alternative therapies, but nothing worked, and for the next year I was in agony. Nearly bedridden, I finally gave in to taking medications.

The medications relieved my symptoms and allowed me to live my life again. I also had a cortisone shot to relieve painful, intractable swelling in my left knee. But I didnt give up hope that I could get off the medications one day.

Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis that can cause painful swelling in joints. It typically affects the big toe, but it can also affect other joints in the body.

Joints affected by gout can become red and hot. The skin may also look shiny and can peel.

Its caused by having too much urate, otherwise known as uric acid, in the body. We all have a certain amount of urate in our body.

However, being overweight or eating and drinking too much of certain types of food and alcoholic drinks can cause some people to have more urate in their bodies. The genes you inherit can make you more likely to develop gout.

If it reaches a high level, urate can form into crystals that remain in and around the joint. They can be there for a while without causing any problems and even without the person realising they are there.

A knock to a part of the body or having a fever can lead to the crystals falling into the soft part of the joint. This will cause pain and swelling.

There are drugs that can reduce the amount of urate in the body and prevent gout attacks. Examples are allopurinol and . If youre having a gout attack, youll also need short-term pain relief. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as well as paracetamol can be good drugs to try first.

Men can get gout from their mid-20s, and in women its more common after the menopause. Taking water tablets can increase the risk of gout.

There are also conditions that cause calcium crystals to form in and around joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease, where the body’s defense mechanism attacks it. What Caused This Increase In Osteoarthritis

One hypothesis they examined was that people are living longer, which would naturally predispose the older generation to arthritis, but a second hypothesis was that obesity was a major factor, as people have become more obese, it has put more wear and tear on muscles and led to an increase in osteoarthritis.

But, what they found is, as they teased out the factors of age and obesity, it didnt completely explain the rapid rise in osteoarthritis findings. They then hypothesized that two additional factors might be to blame inactivity and chronic inflammation. The traumatic decrease in societys activity level has led to a supply and demand deficient for cartilage and muscles. If there isnt enough demand put upon cartilage and muscles, then they atrophy or waste away.

Osteoarthritis is arthritis or pain within a joint.

If you dont put enough demand on cartilage, it gets weaker and thinner, and that can damage its structural integrity. Inactivity has also led to muscle atrophy and a decrease in muscle strength. The more demand you put on muscles and cartilage around the joints, the more strength they have to support joints and decrease osteoarthritis.

    When we think about if arthritis can be reversed, so often our dreams are just shot right out of the sky. Everyone is quick to tell you the things you cannot do. You are usually left with no other options besides a tunnel of despair. One you feel alone in, I may add.

    You likely already know that there isnt a cure for osteoarthritis. What we can do though, is reverse the severity of the symptoms. Arthritis doesnt have to dictate our lives it is possible to come out on top.
