What Is Magnesium Cream
Magnesium cream is absorbed through the skin, and its also known as a transdermal delivery system of the mineral. There have been a few studies showing that theres an immediate action of the magnesium when its absorbed through the skin.
For example, in one study, the finding was that magnesium uptake was five times faster with a magnesium cream compared to tablets.
A separate study which was done by Migraine Action found that transdermal magnesium delivery had a more positive effect on migraines.
People frequently use magnesium creams and lotions after they exercise for sore muscles, and to help improve their sleep quality. There seem to be some potential benefits of using a magnesium cream for people with fibromyalgia also.
Ingredients For Diy Magnesium Cream With Essential Oils
This recipe makes approximately 2 cups of cream. You can halve the recipe, if youd like, but Id just make the whole batch! You can gift half of it to a friend or coworker, if youd like.
This rub is so great for aching feet at the end of a long day!
Whether youre making this magnesium body butter for yourself or as gifts, make sure to grab the free printable jar toppers! Theres more info on them below the tutorial. Theres also a printable recipe card for the muscle rub towards the bottom of the post!
How To Make Muscle Rub Body Butter:
Place the coconut oil, beeswax, and shea butter in a mason jar, large Pyrex measuring cup, or Pyrex bowl.
Put a two or three inches of water in a small pot, place the mason jar in the pot, and place over medium heat on the stove/range. Attractive photo, right? But it shows you the setup!
Stir occasionally and keep an eye on the water. Once it approaches the point of a simmer, turn it down.
Once the mixture has melted completely, carefully remove the mason jar from the double boiler .
Allow the mixture to cool until it becomes slightly cloudy looking. This may take some time, depending on the temperature in your house. You can pop the jar in the fridge for a little while to speed up the process check on it ever 15 minutes or so.
Insert your immersion blender into the jar and start mixing. You can also use a hand mixer on medium speed. You could probably also use a normal blender, though I havent tried it!
Carefully and slowly add the magnesium oil. Keep blending until it is fully combined with the butter mixture.
Add the arrowroot powder, if using, and your essential oils and mix to combine. I used about 30 drops of lavender, 15 of geranium, and 10 of frankincense. You may want to use more .
Ive seen some body butter recipes suggest re-blending in a few minutes, but personally I havent found that it makes much of a difference. If you notice any separation in your body butter, emulsify it some more. If you dont, then youer good to go!

What Are The Symptoms Of Magnesium Deficiency
The symptoms of magnesium deficiency, which is also known as hypomagnesemia, can include:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Heart rhythm changes
There arent really a lot of side effects of getting too much magnesium because your body gets rid of any excess through your urine. Mild symptoms may occur if you take too much of a magnesium supplement, like cramping, nausea, and diarrhea.
If you have a kidney disorder, you should speak with your doctor before you take magnesium supplements.
How Is Topical Magnesium Absorbed Through The Skin
The skin, the largest organ of the body, has three primary functions:
- Temperature control
- Barrier function
While one function of the skin, its barrier function, is to keep water and moisture in while keeping germs and toxins out, the skins other functions, temperature control and detoxification, could not occur if the skin was truly a complete barrier.
When you sweat, for example, you are both controlling your bodys temperature and naturally excreting toxins through your skin. If you can push out toxins, you can pull them in as well. One example of this phenomenon is that fact that a person who regularly uses underarm deodorant containing aluminum will actually show aluminum content in a fecal or urine test.

Can Magnesium Oil Help With Arthritis And Joint Pain
If there is any truism about arthritis, it is that it hurts.
People who have the joint pain and muscle pain caused by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, often consume enormous amounts of over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relievers, such as aspirin, Indicin and Tylenol, to name just a few.
But the problem with non-addictive pain relievers is one that doctors usually forget to tell their patients: Frequent use of NSAIDs for pain, leads to even faster deterioration of cartilage and progressive worsening of the underlying condition, especially when a joint is immobile.

Why Use Topical Magnesium Oil When There Is Magnesium In Food
Though its possible and preferable to get magnesium from a variety of sources, studies show that most Americans have magnesium deficient diets, with one in five getting less than half the RDA for magnesium in their daily diets. 9
Oral supplementation, on the other hand, is affected by numerous things in your gut no matter what type of oral magnesium you use. Because all magnesium taken orally is potentially laxative, the ability to absorb magnesium through the GI tract is limited by shortened transit time.
Oral magnesium can be inconvenient as well, due to the amount needed for adequate dosage. Adequate magnesium is typically not added to multi-vitamins in an attempt to reduce the size and dosage, and magnesium supplements themselves can be large.
Considering these difficulties and the numerous factors that may negatively impact oral magnesium absorption in the GI tract, topical magnesium shows clear benefits.
Why The Body Needs Magnesium
As an abundant mineral in the body, magnesium plays a role in many biological reactions, including protein synthesis, blood glucose control, blood pressure regulation, and muscle and nerve function. Its necessary for the development of bones, and it actively transports potassium and calcium across cell membranes, which is needed for normal heartbeats and muscle contractions. Additionally, magnesium is required for DNA and RNA synthesis and reproduction.
Most people get magnesium through nutrition. Magnesium is added to foods like bread, though it naturally occurs in foods like almonds, spinach, fish, meat, and avocados. You can get magnesium by taking dietary supplements and some medications, like antacids and laxatives. Although many people have an abundance of magnesium in their bodies, certain groups, such as older people or those with Type 2 diabetes, gastrointestinal diseases, or alcohol dependencies, are prone to magnesium deficiencies. Common early signs of a deficiency include nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, and weakness. As a deficiency worsens, you may begin to feel cramps, seizures, personality changes, coronary spasms, or abnormal heart rhythms.

What The Experts Say
It is advised to look at the ingredients list of a cream to see if it is formulated with topical anesthetics which can help numb the affected area and lessen pain. If you are someone with extremely sensitive skin, it may be beneficial to look for an arthritis cream that caters to sensitive skin and is less irritative. The side effects list can show you what symptoms you may be subjected to after using the cream. If you already suffer from any of those conditions, it is advised to consult your doctor prior to use. What Is The History Of Transdermal Delivery
Humans have been using the skin as a direct pathway into the body for centuries, and only recently have we begun to understand the science behind it.
Many people are familiar with the healing properties of saunas, used quite often for detox and general well-being. Saunas are the closest modern equivalent to the ancient practice of balneology, a healing method that can be traced to antiquity.
Ancient treatments in fact involved a variety of transdermal therapies ranging from mineral baths, to herbal compresses, to mud packs, to steam and sweat lodges. These topical remedies were not limited to one culture, but were a part of many of the documented societies spread throughout the world.
More recent examples of topical and transdermal therapies can be found from the 18th through the early 20th century and eventually led to the technological advancements seen today. Throughout Europe, the skin as a gateway for medical therapy became increasingly popular in the late 18th century. In an age where open wounds often led to infection, topical remedies were favored over risky surgeries. For instance, soaking in sulfurous mineral baths became a widespread treatment for gout, which might otherwise have meant amputation.

Why You Should Try A Magnesium Cream
When are applied to the body, they look for skin oils to help absorb into the skin.1 For the Magnesium to be properly absorbed, there needs to be a certain proportion of lipids on the skin. For those with drier skin with less lipids, absorption may be problematic and your Magnesium products may remain on the surface of the skin, so the solution for those with dry skin is a rich or lotion. Magnesium creams contain other natural ingredients such as rich natural butters that are similar to skin’s lipids. This allows the Magnesium to sink in and help contribute to the healing and regeneration of the skin.1
