Psoriatic arthritis occurs most commonly in the knees, ankles, fingers, toes, and lower back. Symptoms include:

  • Stiffness in your joints, especially in the morning
  • Painful swelling in the fingers and toes
  • Pain where tendons and ligaments attach to your joints. This means you may have foot pain at the back of your heel
  • Joint tenderness to the touch

Some arthritic symptoms overlap, so it may be difficult to know which form of arthritis you have. If you believe you may have one of these conditions, it is always best to get checked out by a doctor before symptoms worsen.

What Is A Joint And How Does It Work

A joint is where two or more bones meet, such as in the fingers, knees, and shoulders. Joints hold bones in place and allow them to move freely within limits.

Most of the joints in our body are surrounded by a strong capsule. The capsule is filled with a thick fluid that helps to lubricate the joint. These capsules hold our bones in place. They do this with the help of ligaments. These are a bit like very strong elastic bands.

The ends of the bones within a joint are lined with cartilage. This is a smooth but tough layer of tissue that allows bones to glide over one another as you move.

If we want to move a bone, our brain gives a signal to the muscle, which then pulls a tendon, and this is attached to the bone. Muscles therefore have an important role in supporting a joint.

What Is Involved In Reviewing Your Medical History And Your Current Symptoms

When reviewing your medical history, your healthcare provider may ask the following questions:

  • Have you had any illnesses or injuries that may explain the pain?

  • Is there a family history of arthritis or other rheumatic diseases?

  • What medication are you currently taking?

Your healthcare provider may also ask:

  • What symptoms are you having? For example, pain, stiffness, difficulty with movement, or swelling.

Surgery For Back Arthritis

Surgery is a last resort when it comes to arthritis in the back. Know that 95 percent of people with back pain will not need surgery, and 75 percent will fully recover within three months, says Dr. Tiso.

Doctors recommend that you try medications, physical therapy, and weight loss before considering surgery, says Dr. Kilian. The best surgical outcomes often occur in patients who are actively involved in physical therapy and have a healthy body weight, he says.

The type of surgery depends on the type of arthritis and region of the back that is affected. Depending on the procedure performed, surgery aims to decompress any pinched nerves and free up the nerve roots from bone spurs and other tissues that may be pressing on them.

Why Its Essential To Diagnose Hand Arthritis

How To Tell If You Might Have Been Misdiagnosed With Knee Arthritis

If you have hand pain, the first step is to have it diagnosed. Many times, I will see patients for arthritis and diagnose them with another condition that causes joint pain, Dr. Panico said. Gout, pseudogout, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and tendinitis can have similar symptoms. These conditions are treated differently, so it is worth the evaluation, she said.

She also said youll want to have a medical professional evaluate your joint pain if its impacting your ability to do your job or your daily activities or if your range of motion is shrinking and its becoming difficult to move the joint. A simple x-ray can determine if you have osteoarthritis. People often think their condition is just part of aging. That might be true, but there could be something other than arthritis causing your pain. And even if we cannot completely take the pain away, we can help you understand ways to modify activities, Dr. Panico said.

Getting Tested For Arthritis

Arthritis testing is ordered by a doctor or specialist if indicated by a patients signs or symptoms. For testing that requires a sample of a patients blood, the sample can be drawn in a doctors office or other medical setting.

A sample of synovial fluid is obtained through a procedure called a joint aspiration or arthrocentesis. During a joint aspiration, a doctor applies local anesthesia to the affected joint before using a needle to withdraw a sample of synovial fluid for analysis. An ultrasound may be performed during a joint aspiration to help the doctor obtain the sample.

Urine samples and oral swabs may be collected by a doctor or by the patient using a doctors instructions. In some cases, a 24-hour urine sample may be required, which involves the collection of all a patients urine over a 24-hour period.
