How Did Our Protein Fixation Begin
Where did the idea originate that we need a lot of balanced protein to be healthy?
Did you ever hear the myth of protein combining? Its the notion that you need to combine certain foods in a given meal to ensure the protein is complete. Im frequently asked about this when I lecture.
The concept was created about 40 years ago and it stated that since certain foods, particularly plant foods, were low in particular essential amino acids. Due to this perceived deficiency, it was recommended you complement the amino acid profile of one food with another food.
An example of this is rice and beans. It was thought they needed to be eaten together to make a complete protein. This was wrong.
Dr John McDougall successfully took on the American Heart Association and had them recant their 2001 claim that questioned the completeness of plant proteins. The Association now acknowledges, plant proteins provide all the essential amino acids.
It Aids In Weight Loss
Obesity is one of the causative factors of weakening of joints.
Excessive fat exerts too much load and breaks the collagen fibres responsible for holding together connective tissues.
Resveratrol is believed to have the ability to prevent the damage caused to collagen.
Resveratrol is believed to have the ability to prevent the damage caused to collagen fibers and strengthen them simultaneously.
This property was validated by a study on an animal model of obesity
. The diets were supplemented with resveratrol in an attempt to study how the compound affects collagen fibers in the body.
At the end of 12 weeks, the DNA fragmentation in the cartilages of the mice was analyzed.
The results showed that higher doses of resveratrol were linked with improved joint health and stronger collagen fibers.
What does this mean? From the above study, it can be inferred that resveratrol is a useful preventive and therapeutic agent in obesity . It provides essential nutrients required for collagen fibres and healthy connective tissues.

It Has A Chemopreventive Action And Prevents Disease Progression In Arthritis
Apoptosis i.e. program cell death is a key event during the onset of arthritis.
It damages the cartilages and therefore weakens the joint sites.
Resveratrol is believed to have the ability to decelerate the activity of apoptotic cells and therefore prevent damage to the cartilages.
This was further validated through the following study.
A suitable animal model was used to conduct these experiments.
The effects of this varying dosage were assessed at the end of a 4 week period through histological studies on the site of administration.
The results showed a significant reduction in the rate of cell death especially in the animals which were given a higher dose of resveratrol.
What does this mean? From this study, it can be concluded that the use of resveratrol in arthritis affected individuals delays cell destruction and protects the tissue against the damaging effects of the disease.
Other Immunomodulatory And Cytotoxic Agents
Some additional immunomodulatory drugs are used in RA including azathioprine , and cyclosporin A . Rarely cyclophosphamide and d-Penicillamine are used. Because the potential of high toxicity, these agents are typically utilized for life-threatening extra-articular manifestations of RA such as systemic vasculitis or with severe articular disease that is refractory to other therapy.
Azathioprine has some activity in rheumatoid arthritis but may take 8-12 weeks to see an effect. It is a purine analog that can cause bone marrow suppression and lowering of blood cell counts particularly in patients with renal insufficiency or when used concomitantly with allopurinol or ACE inhibitors. Increased risk of secondary malignancy due to azathioprine is controversial. Screening for levels of the enzyme thiopurine methyltransferase is recommended before initiating therapy with azathioprine. Certain individuals have deficiencies in this enzyme that metabolizes azathioprine with a concomitantly increased risk of toxicitiy for the medication. Side effects include nausea, and alopecia. Blood tests to monitor blood counts and liver function tests are necessary for patients on azathioprine.

Can Collagen Cure Arthritis
Chronic joint pain is a very common condition with four out of ten people experiencing it at some point in their life. As we age, the stress from physical activity paired to the normal wear and tear takes a toll on our joints, and if not addressed it could result in a long-term condition. It is well known that drinking collagen is beneficial for joints, which has led to many studies analyzing the impact of collagen on arthritis. In this article, we will discuss the effects that collagen peptides have on people suffering from arthritis.
What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is essentially inflammation of the joints. It is not one disease, but a term used to refer to any disorder that affects joints. There are over 100 different types of arthritis. The most common types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degeneration of the cartilage, which leads to bone rubbing against bone causing pain and discomfort. Rheumatoid arthritis results from the immune system incorrectly triggering joint inflammation as a defense mechanism.
So, can collagen cure arthritis?

Hyaluronic Acid For Dry Eye
HA is found naturally in the aqueous humor and vitreous of the eye. It is useful in retaining water studies show that it can bind up to 1000 times its weight in water, making it a useful rewetting agent.
It also helps stabilize the tear film in the eye which along with its wound healing capabilities, make it very useful in the treatment of dry eye, improving vision in post-surgical patients, and healing corneal abrasions.
Bottom Line: Keep some HA drops handy in your medicine cabinet.

Study Sheds New Light on This Critical Protein’s Involvement in Autoimmunity and Chronic, Corrosive Joint Inflammation
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints, which gradually erodes the cartilage and bone. The agents of destruction include inflammatory cells, cytokines, and protein-degrading enzymes known as matrix metalloproteinases . The vicious cycle begins when inflammatory cells infiltrate the tissue lining the joints and consume excess oxygen. In addition to unleashing MMPs, the oxidative stress provokes non-enzymatic glycation – a chemical binding of sugar molecules and proteins. Telltale signs of glycation have been found in blood, urine, and synovial fluid of RA patients.
“The present findings support the possibility that chemical modification of self antigens, in RA in particular and in inflammation in general, is the cause of formation of neoepitopes,” reflects the study’s leading author, Ahuva Nissim, Ph.D. “We propose that the oxidative modification of CII creates a CII autoantigen.” This hypothesis has important implications for the further study and enhanced understanding of the pathology of RA – a complex autoimmune disease.

The Functioning Power Of Bone Broth
Bone broth, as stated earlier, is a very important soup made from simmering animal bones, cider vinegar, and vegetables. These food particles have to be cooked for more than eighteen hours to ensure a better broth supplement.
A well-prepared broth supplement contains amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and collagen. All these minerals contribute to the well-being of the human body.
Bone broth can be taken as a side dish together with meat, vegetables, and many other dishes. According to the broth consumers, results are normally witnessed three to four weeks after consumption.
Bone broth adds more energy to the body every day. The collagen pigment in broth is essential for the growth of nails, hair, and skin.

Resveratrol Improves Antioxidant Defenses
Free radicles are harmful chemicals that are present in our body in an unbound form.
In order to regularly check their levels, compounds called antioxidants are required.
When the rate of accumulation of free radicles in the body exceeds the rate of their elimination, a condition oxidative stress arises.
This is one of the causative agents of arthritis as free radicles act on our joints and accelerate the aging process.
The ability of resveratrol to eliminate free radicle expression in the body was studied using a group of arthritis animal model.
The experiment involved the administration of resveratrol over a period of 12 days at the end of which reduced swelling at the affected site as well as suppression of oxidative stress were observed.
These results were due to the action of polyphenolic compounds of resveratrol on the cellular mitochondria.
The polyphenols react with the mitochondria and alter its membrane potential in order to release mitochondrial reactive oxygen species which eliminate free radicles.
The compound nitric oxide acts on cells and activates apoptosis in them.
Increased levels of nitric oxide are directly linked to high cell death rates which degenerates tissues over time and could cause rheumatoid arthritis.
In an animal model, it was observed that resveratrol administration reversed the effects of nitric oxide in tissues and significantly lowered its levels.
It blocks the apoptosis of cells and thus avoids damage to tissues.

Is There A Plus Side To Consuming Collagen
Most of the research I found involved patients suffering from either rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. What researchers discovered was the undenatured type II collagen, typically derived from chicken cartilage, has an ability to lessen symptoms in both animals and humans afflicted with these conditions.
The benefits last only as long as the collagen continues to be consumed, meaning its not correcting the underlying root cause of the conditions, but lets first look at the mechanism at play.
I explain the mechanisms underlying autoimmune disease here, but in a nutshell, autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis develop because the immune system mistakes the protein of your joints for an enemy. It attacks this enemy and the result is joint destruction.
A healthy immune system would never make such a mistake, but with the autoimmune disease, the immune system is overtaxed and confuses friend for a foe.

How Is This Medication Given
Generally, hydroxychloroquine is given in 200 mg or 400 mg doses, once per day. Higher doses can sometimes be used, but only in adults and not for all cases. Some people tolerate this medication much better than other people, so it is important that individuals who are considering taking hydroxychloroquine talk with their doctor about the lowest necessary dose to reduce or eliminate their symptoms. They should also discuss any side effects that may appear, and focus on what they should do if they experience problems when taking this medication for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis or another condition.
Precautions While Taking Resveratrol For Arthritis
Certain cases of resveratrol administration have shown allergic reactions in patients.
It is essential to carry out patch tests to detect this at least 48 hours before use is initiated. Some cases of intestinal upset and nausea have also been reported.
Some research has shown the expression of toxic activity at very high concentrations. However, this has only been seen in vitro studies at levels much higher than possible by dietary supplementation

Are Drug Interactions A Concern
According to WebMD, in most cases, you dont need to be worried about drug interactions when taking hydroxychloroquine. It has only a mild effect on the immune system, but you should still tell your doctors what you are taking. Even if you only take over-the-counter medications, let them know so they can help you make sure you wont have an adverse reaction. You also want your medications to be effective, so being sure youre taking them correctly and not mixing anything together that could be a problem is important. Hydroxychloroquine can be a great choice to reduce rheumatoid arthritis symptoms when taken correctly.
Side Effects Of Hyaluronic Acid
HA is generally recognized as safe with few reported side effects. Allergic reactions are rare as it is made naturally in your body.
Injections into the joint may cause redness and swelling. HA may increase eye pressure if injected into the eye. These symptoms usually resolved within 48-72 hours.
However, not enough is known about its safety for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding so it may be a good idea to avoid using it during this time.
Cancer cells may be sensitive to HA so supplementation could stimulate their growth. If you have a history of cancer, it may be advisable to avoid taking HA supplements.
Bottom Line: HA appears to be a safe supplement to use but just be cautious if youre pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of cancer.

Immune Tolerance Induced By Chicken Type Ii Collagen As Treatment For Ra
July 25, 2008 By Arthritis Center
Type II collagen is abundant in the joint and is a major target of immune-mediated damage in RA. As suggested in studies of experimental animals, induction of immune tolerance at the level of the cartilage may be a way of reducing the signs and symptoms of RA and prevent joint destruction. However, whether oral administration of Type II collagen is an efficacious treatment for humans with established active RA has not been established. Zhang et al : 905) present the results of a blinded clinical trial of chicken Type II collagen vs. methotrexate in patients with early RA.
