How To Pronounce Psoriatic Arthritis

Have You Tried The X Diet

Psoriasis – Medical Meaning and Pronunciation

If only it really was as easy as eliminating processed foods, or going vegetarian. Clasina Field, co-executive director of Bens Friends, a network of support communities for people with rare and chronic illnesses, says that this comment makes her want to scream. If it were as simple as switching my diet, do you think I’d be like this? It’s belittling and it’s patronizing. While focusing on an anti-inflammatory diet can play a role in treating inflammatory diseases like PsA, its not a magical cure on its own.

I Know Exactly How You Feel

A lot of people may try to express empathy or relate, but hearing PsA be compared to other common aches and pains can be frustrating for people with the illness. Generally, very few people get it, says Field. Coping with a chronic, rare disease is a unique experience that often comes with isolation and desperationso, please, dont insist you know exactly how I feel. For many people with PsA, the disease impacts all aspects of lifeleading to chronic energy loss, professional uncertainty, and, sometimes, financial strain. That experience is impossible to fully understand if you havent lived it.

Ignorance Can Lead To Insensitivity

If you have PsA, youve likely already discovered how well-meaning friends and family members can make wrong-headed assumptions about your conditionand vocalize them to you!even when they have no idea what theyre talking about. Its not a common disorder, Dr. Haberman explains, so it can be difficult for others to understand what you are experiencing. This can lead to insensitive commentspotentially worsening negative self-esteem and anxiety in a disorder where a negative mental health impact is often an issue, she adds.

Diet Types To Consider

Some people tout certain diets as being beneficial for health conditions. Here we take a look at several popular diets and how they may affect psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

Note that the approach of these diets vary widely some even provide conflicting guidance. As well, there is limited evidence that these diets actually improve psoriatic arthritis.

Yikes That Looks Painful

When its uncontrolled, PsA can cause immense pain, restrict movement, and even become disabling. But pointing out that someone looks like they have an illness or disability just puts them in the uncomfortable position of having to explain themselvesall the time. Shirley Wallace, 49, of Pulaski, NY, hears this comment often because her hands have been deformed as a result of her PsA. Its frustrating, she says, because it makes her feel like she is constantly talking about her condition and why she looks a certain way to other people. And who wants that?

It’s Up To You How Much You Want To Say

Most of the time, the person’s question or comment is innocentthey have no idea theyre prying, says Field, who confesses she fantasizes about handing out business cards that simply read: I HAVE PSORIATIC ARTHROPATHY, rather than arthritis, shutting down further inquiry while pre-empting all Hey, I have arthritis, too! comments in one fell swoop. Still, If its a friend or family member, educating them a bit might be worthwhile, she adds, although, ultimately, its up to you.

You’re Too Young To Have Arthritis

When it comes to unwanted commentary, this has to be a frequent offender. While osteoarthritis is usually caused by wear and tear on the joints and tends to develop later in life, PsA usually appears between the ages of 30 to 50, according to the American College of Rheumatology. It can be diagnosed even when someone is a child or teenager, and a lot of patients are diagnosed in their 20s and 30s, Dr. Haberman says. She adds that most people with PsA have psoriasis for five to 10 years before they develop arthritis.

Most people wish they could jump up and go about daily life without reservation, but thats not always possible. I wish I had the energy that some of those my age do, yet my body thinks otherwise, Pellegrin says. Just because someone doesnt complain or act like they are in pain doesnt mean that theyre notmany people with PsA say that theyve just gotten so good at living with discomfort, other people are clueless about what theyre truly experiencing.

Deucravacitinib For Active Psoriatic Arthritis

Transcript:

Philip J. Mease, MD: These were very interesting data. Deucravacitinib is an oral medication. It is a selective tyrosine kinase 2 inhibitor, a TYK2 inhibitor. So in the Janus kinase family there is JAK1, JAK2, JAK3, and TYK2, so all these are considered part of the Janus kinase family. They have a role in facilitating signaling from a receptor on, say, an immune cell surface for a potentially pro-inflammatory cytokine, which then signals into the cell and gets the cell to turn on and produce more inflammatory cytokines. Giving an inhibitor to 1 of these JAK molecules inhibits this signaling. There are many pro-inflammatory cytokines that signal through this mechanism. And whether its a JAK1 and JAK3 or a JAK1 and TYK2 at the receptor site makes a difference in which cytokines are doing the signaling. For example, if they are, TYK2 we know has a role in inhibiting signaling by interleukin-23. From the data that we just discussed with guselkumab, we know this a very important cytokine in the pathogenesis of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. There are other cytokines that are affected as well.

This particular molecule, deucravacitinib, is also unique in that it is an allosteric inhibitor that attaches to the regulatory domain instead of the ATP-binding active side of the catalytic domain. It is extremely specific for TYK2 in that way, and this ultimately may have some impact on efficacy or safety.

Mypsa Is A New Online Hub Designed To Give People With Psoriatic Arthritis Access To Tailored Information About Their Condition And Much More

Arthritis Australia recently launched the MyPsA website as an interactive hub for people living with psoriatic arthritis.

Psoriatic arthritis is an autoimmune condition that affects the skin, nails or joint tissues and causes damage and pain. It affects around 200,000 Australians and is closely associated with the skin condition psoriasis. Thirty per cent of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis, although some people may have one condition and not the other.

MyPsA is a vital tool for helping those living with psoriatic arthritis to get a greater depth of knowledge on how to manage this complex condition, said Arthritis Australia CEO Jonathan Smithers.

The website can be viewed by the general public, however, to get the maximum benefit from it, you can register for a free, personalised account. This will allow you to enter details about your current health and wellbeing, which you can refer back to anytime to track your symptoms and progress.

When you join up, you can choose to enter details about your condition and how it affects you. This will enable the content you see to be customised to your needs. So, it doesnt matter if youve had PsA for a week or several decades, the information you receive via your MyPsA account will meet you where you are at now.

The site features a wide range of articles and videos about psoriatic arthritis, covering topics from diagnosis and medications to healthy living tips and more.

But You Look Fantastic

Not everyone with PsA looks sick. In fact, someone can have very active disease without other people being able to tell right away, says Dr. Haberman. Thats especially true if the psoriasis isnt actively flared, but the arthritis is. Remember, PsA causes inflammation that isnt necessarily visible from the outsideespecially when its in more hidden areas, like the spot where a muscle inserts into the bone, says Dr. Haberman. An arthritic knee may be clearly swollen other tissues in the body can be just as painful but visually undetectable.

In a new study, investigators from Brigham and Womens Hospital found the people who took vitamin D, or vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids, had a significantly lower rate of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, autoimmune thyroid disease, and psoriasis than people who took a placebo.

With their findings published Wednesday in BMJ, the team had tested this in the large-scale vitamin D and omega-3 trial , a randomized study which followed participants for approximately five years. Investigators found the people who took vitamin D, or vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids had a significantly lower rate of AD than people who took a placebo.

It is exciting to have these new and positive results for nontoxic vitamins and supplements preventing potentially highly morbid diseases, said senior author Karen Costenbader of the Brighams Division of Rheumatology, Inflammation and Immunity. This is the first direct evidence we have that daily supplementation may reduce AD incidence, and what looks like more pronounced effect after two years of supplementation for vitamin D. We look forward to honing and expanding our findings and encourage professional societies to consider these results and emerging data when developing future guidelines for the prevention of autoimmune diseases in midlife and older adults.

You’re Just Being Lazy

Thanks to body-wide inflammation, PsA can cause serious fatigue, says Dr. Habermanwhich others can mistake for lack of initiative. People with PsA also have higher rates of anxiety and depression, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, she adds. PsA comes with many other medical problems that may not be easily visible. Jennifer Pellegrin, 37, of Jurupa Valley, CA, says the invisibility of her PsA symptoms can make her coping strategieslike taking extra time to get ready, or doing stretches before getting out of bedcome across as laziness rather than self-care.

How Doctors Treat Psa To Stop Or Slow Progression

Starting a treatment plan as soon as possible is key to slowing the joint damage of PsA, as well as minimizing other health risks. Left untreated, PsA will progress, and the joint damage is generally irreversible.

Your doctor may prescribe one or more of the following:

  • TNF blockers. These are biologic DMARDs that help stop and prevent or limit joint damage. Biologics are typically antibodies that can block or inhibit a specific target involved in a disease. In this case, the biologic targets TNF.
  • Methotrexate. This is a non-biologic DMARD that reduces inflammation overall, but doesnât help with joint damage. Usually used in conjunction with other medication.
  • Leflunomide. This non-biologic DMARD reduces inflammation and slows disease progression.
  • Steroids . This class of drugs reduces inflammation and suppresses the immune system.
  • Phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitors. These drugs block certain enzymes that cause inflammation.
  • Monoclonal antibodies. Other biologics for psoriatic arthritis include interleukin inhibitors that target particular inflammatory and immune responses.

Some medicines for psoriatic arthritis have side effects, such as . They can affect liver function, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure too, so be sure to discuss the risks and benefits of PsA medication with your doctor. Seeing a doctor who specializes in psoriatic arthritisâa rheumatologistâis the best way to develop a safe and effective treatment plan.

  • Maintain a healthy weight and diet.
