At the weekend we ran one of our Healing Foods workshops, and I discussed food that helps pain management.

In my clinic I often work with clients who experience pain on a regular basis. This may be in relation to arthritis, headaches, period pain or aches and pains from training in the gym. There is so much we can do to help manage pain purely by diet. Here is some information about how pain occurs and my top tips for eating to keep it at bay.

WHERE THERE IS PAIN THERE IS INFLAMMATION

The underlying cause for inflammation may be due to a number of factors. Some common areas for consideration are:

Hormones: Some hormones are connected with the inflammatory response .

Fats: The amount and type of fat in the diet is directly linked with inflammation, especially the essential fatty acids omega 3 and omega 6 .

Digestion: Our digestive system also has the power to mess about with inflammation in the body. If the digestive system is struggling then localized damage may occur in the gut leading to inflammation and food sensitivities .

Directions For Future Research

We need to find out, say the authors, why MAP is more predominant in these patients whether its present because they have RA , or whether it caused RA in these patients. If we find that out, then we can target treatment toward the MAP bacteria.

To this end, the researchers plan to carry out further studies, in the hope that their findings will be replicated.

National studies should now also investigate how many patients get both rheumatoid arthritis and Crohns disease, say the scientists. They themselves plan to examine the association further in people from different countries and of different ethnicities.

Understanding the role of MAP in rheumatoid arthritis, explains Naser, means the disease could be treated more effectively. Ultimately, we may be able to administer a combined treatment to target both inflammation and bacterial infection.

Maybe It Is A Vitamin D Deficiency

My reading on vitamin D makes me want to suggest another hypothesis. There is evidence for the fact that vitamin D deficiency can cause pain in the bones. I now believe that perhaps the pain in the joints that can come from eating milk or other dairy products may be caused by the problems of absorbing calcium without sufficient vitamin D in the system.

The only way of testing this hypothesis is to do a research study. I wish I could! Does anyone want to donate some capital resources to make the research possible?

I could test this hypothesis by seeing if the joint pain occurs after drinking dairy milk after a month or so of supplementing vitamin D. It would be barely scientific though!

It might be a vitamin D deficiency that is causing the pain in your joints and bones. And the fact that it happens more after you eat calcium might be a result of the way vitamin D , helps your body to absorb calcium .

    These similarities intrigued the authors of the new research, who are: Saleh Naser, who is an infectious disease specialist at the University of Central Florida in Orlando Dr. Shazia Bég, who is a rheumatologist at UCFs physician practice and Robert Sharp, who is a Ph.D. candidate in biomedical sciences at UCFs medical school.

    The researchers analyzed clinical samples from 100 people with rheumatoid arthritis. Of these, 78 percent had a genetic mutation that they shared with people with Crohns disease: the PTPN2/22 gene.
