People with hip pain typically try not to stand much, since it can be an uncomfortable position. But sitting shortens the hip flexor muscles, which can actually increase pain, says Genie Lieberman, the director of the Gloria Drummond Physical Rehabilitation Institute at the Boca Raton Regional Hospital in Florida.
To promote the full extension of the hips, Lieberman recommends lying face down for up to 30 minutes, with small pillows placed under your shoulders for comfort. You can do this on your bed turn your head to either side and rest it on your forearms for comfort. In the beginning, it may be too painful to stay this way for more than a few seconds, but as you stretch the muscles it will get easier.

For each unit decrease in baseline SF-12 PCS, the effect on SF-6D increased and could be calculated as 0.0980.002×, suggesting that total knee replacement would become more effective if it was restricted to patients with SF-12 PCS scores < 50. For osteoarthritis specific measures of quality of life, the procedures main effects included improvement of the WOMAC score by 10.69 and KOOS quality of life of 9.16 points. Total knee replacement reduced the odds of use of medication for osteoarthritis pain, but this effect was uncertain, with an odds ratio of 0.81 . Use of non-pharmacological treatment did not significantly seem to change with total knee replacement . These effects were generally consistent with those obtained from multivariable adjusted analyses of MOST data, although in MOST the effect on SF-12 MCS was positive in contrast with the effect in OAI .

Even when using standard criteria for determining candidacy, about one-third of knee replacements are deemed inappropriate when evaluated by independent researchers. When knee pain is legitimately caused by a knee condition, many knee-replacement candidates seek out alternatives to surgery. There are many regenerative-medicine options, such as autologous stem cell injections, that could potentially relieve pain and increase activity levels without amputating the knee, sawing bones, snipping away pieces of meniscus or frayed cartilage, and replacing the knee with a foreign device. If it is determined that your knee pain is due to a spinal condition, there are also nonsurgical options for spinal treatment to consider.

Except in very rare cases, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons advises against using opioid medications for knee osteoarthritis.
