They also think that immune system problems, infection, obesity, and physical trauma play a role in determining who will develop the disease. Psoriasis itself is neither infectious nor contagious.

Recent research has shown that people with psoriatic arthritis have an increased level of tumor necrosis factor in their joints and affected skin areas. These increased levels can overwhelm the immune system, making it unable to control the inflammation associated with psoriatic arthritis.

These results are not news for blogger Amanda Steyer, who has psoriatic arthritis. Fatigue is a huge part of living with psoriatic arthritis, she says. There are days when I dont want to get out of bed and spend the entire day wishing I could get back into bed. Steyer has a lot of motivation to get going though: She homeschools three of her five children, ages 17, 14, and 12.

Steyer was formally diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis at 41 but has had symptoms on and off throughout her life. My energy levels are better not fantastic, but much more manageable than when my psoriatic arthritis is untreated, she says. She can move more freely and even hike with her family, a pastime shes always enjoyed.

Why Psoriasis May Lead To Fatigue

Psoriasis is something people see on their skin so they may think its just skin-deep, but it really isnt, says Rosalyn George, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and owner of Wilmington Dermatology Center in North Carolina. Its actually a truly systemic disease. This means psoriasis can affect the entire body, not just the skin. One of the ways it does so is by causing persistent fatigue, notes Dr. George.

Doctors arent sure exactly how psoriasis causes fatigue, but they suspect it might have to do with the fact that psoriasis causes an immune system reaction, and when your immune system is on hyper alert all the time, your body gets tired because its constantly working, explains George.

Psoriasis is a disease of inflammation, says Neelam Vashi, MD, an assistant professor of dermatology at Boston University School of Medicine and a dermatologist at Boston Medical Center. Inflammation can go to the skin, to the joints, and to other places in the body. According to Dr. Vashi, when the body has disease, it makes proteins called cytokines that cause inflammation. Its not fully understood how these proteins can cause fatigue, but they set off the immune system and trigger inflammation, which takes up the bodys energy.

Psoriatic arthritis occurs most commonly in adults between the ages of 35 and 55 however, it can develop at any age. Psoriatic arthritis affects men and women equally.

It is possible to develop psoriatic arthritis with only a family history of psoriasis and while less common, psoriatic arthritis can occur before psoriasis appears. Children of parents with psoriasis are three times more likely to have psoriasis and are at greater risk for developing psoriatic arthritis. The most typical age of juvenile onset is 9-11 years of age.

How Is Psoriatic Arthritis Treated

Treatment will depend on your symptoms, age, and general health. It will also depend on the severity of your condition.

Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic health condition that involves inflammation, and inflammatory conditions can bring about some fatigue as a symptom, says Christine Alexander, MD, chair of the department of family medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Depression linked to chronic illness and pain could also contribute to fatigue, she adds.

Whether your fatigue is due to your psoriatic arthritis, a coexisting condition such as fibromyalgia, or treatment, try these strategies to regain some of your energy.

    Most people understand what you mean when you say youre tired weve all been there. When youre tired, you feel as if your body is dragging. You might crave a bit more sugar and caffeine than usual for energy. Perhaps you can sneak in a short nap and wake up feeling a little perkier.     The FDA has also recently approved Inflectra , a biosimilar to infliximab, for the treatment of psoriatic arthritis.7Physical and occupational therapy can be critical treatment approaches to both protect the involved joints and maintain function.5
