Ra Vs Oa Epidemiology

The primary difference between RA and OA is the underlying nature of the disease. RA is an autoimmune disorder that produces inflammatory joint symptoms throughout the body. OA is a degenerative condition that is the result of increased wear and tear on joints. OA may produce inflammatory symptoms as well, but it primarily destroys joint cartilage over time.

OA affects an estimated 27 million Americans while only 1.3 million Americans have RA. Both RA and OA are more prevalent in women than in men. RA can develop in patients anytime between the ages of 30 and 60 years old. OA generally develops later in life.

Of The 16 Products We Tested Seven Didn’t Contain All That They Claimed

U.S. consumers spent $753 million in 2012 on supplements of glucosamine and chondroitin in an attempt to relieve pain and stiffness from arthritis, according to the Nutrition Business Journal. But the scientific jury is still out as to whether those products work. And on top of that, our new tests of 16 widely sold joint supplements found that some contained less chondroitin than they said they did, and two didnt dissolve sufficiently.

All of the tested products contain a combination of glucosamine salt and chondroitin sulfate, ingredients that occur naturally in and around the cartilage that cushions the joints. Some research has suggested that the combination might reduce pain in certain people with osteoarthritis, the degenerative joint disease that affects 27 million Americans. But the evidence is far from conclusive.

In a large, multicenter trial published in 2006, researchers found some evidence that glucosamine and chondroitin alleviated pain in patients with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis, the most common type. But subsequent studies have not confirmed that finding. And treatment guidelines issued in May 2013 by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons dont recommend glucosamine and chondroitin supplements, citing lack of efficacy.

    Potential Concerns With Calcium Supplements

Rheumatoid Arthritis Supplement Natural Remedy (BM139)

There are some concerns about taking large doses of calcium via supplements.

For example, calcium supplements have been associated with symptoms like constipation, kidney stones, and other digestive issues. There are also some concerns that they may be bad for heart health .

One review found an increased risk of heart attacks in those taking calcium supplements. That said, other studies have not shown a link between calcium supplements and negative outcomes for heart health .

As dietary intake of calcium has not been linked to these side effects, its best to focus on meeting your calcium needs through your diet and discussing the potential need for supplements with your healthcare provider.

    Summary

While there are certain situations in which calcium supplements may be indicated, the current research doesnt support the use of calcium supplements to prevent or manage osteoporosis.

Safe Use Of Glucosamine And Chondroitin

Be aware that such supplements as glucosamine and chondroitin are not subject to approval by the FDA and do not fall under the same rigorous and strict standards that traditional medications do. Patients should ask their healthcare provider and their pharmacist for suggestions on which brands they believe to have the highest quality product.

It would also be wise to contact the glucosamine or chondroitin manufacturer through the Internet or from addresses or phone numbers found on the bottle for more information concerning their methods of quality assurance for their product.

Possibly, Cartilage loss with age or injury may contribute to joint pain. If youre looking to increase your bodys supply of collagen, which is one of the building blocks of cartilage, try taking a high-quality collagen supplement. Vitamin E Is Most Effective In A Combination Therapy

There have been studies investigating the effects of vitamin E in association with other compounds on arthritis symptoms. Animal studies on mice prone to rheumatoid arthritis have examined the effects on vitamin supplementation in association with omega-3 fatty acids6.

Researchers have concluded that vitamin E may decrease pro-inflammatory cytokines and lipid mediators. However, further studies are necessary to determine optimal nutrient combinations to support healthy joints.

Patients who suffer from osteoarthritis pain and are deficient in vitamin D may get some relief with vitamin D supplementation. These findings were presented at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases in Milan, Italy, March 2629.

Like rheumatoid arthritis , osteoarthritis involves joint inflammation. The two conditions, however, have very different causes, symptoms, and treatments. Unlike RA, OA is not an autoimmune disease but rather a condition characterized by the breakdown of cartilage in a joint, which also involves changes to bone, ligaments, and other parts of the joint. As cartilage is lost, bones can begin to rub against each other, causing pain and swelling.

To determine how patients responded to vitamin D, the researchers used MRI to measure changes in knee cartilage and also used an established index to measure changes in knee pain.

    Health Benefits And Risks

The Arthritis Foundation states that some supplements may relieve pain, stiffness, and other symptoms of arthritis. It also suggests using supplements alongside arthritis drugs, not as a substitute. Medications are the only scientifically proven treatment to slow joint damage.

A 2020 review on rheumatoid arthritis indicates that some supplements may have beneficial effects. However, research into the impact of diet and dietary supplements on RA is limited.

Furthermore, the AF highlights the importance of consulting a doctor before taking any supplements for arthritis. Some supplements may interact with other medications or cause side effects.

It is also of note that there is little research into the effectiveness of supplements.

Some supplements have different benefits than others. In the sections below, we list supplements and their possible benefits.

What Are The Causes Of Osteoarthritis

As people age, they are at an increased risk of developing Osteoarthritis because this is a natural part of the aging process.

Genetics also plays a role in whether or not you will be likely to develop it. Osteoarthritis has no real symptoms until the cartilage that covers your joints starts to wear down and gradually deteriorate.

This makes the bones rub together, causing pain and stiffness in your joints. There are no signs or symptoms that signal Osteoarthritis in particular, but you will often experience the following: Joint pain, limited movement reduced physical activity.

    Can Diet Help Treat Arthritis

Top 15 Joint Supplements for Arthritis

Research suggests that following an anti-inflammatory diet can reduce osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. A healthy diet can also lead to weight loss, which reduces stress and strain on joints. Gout, a form of metabolic arthritis, can be relieved by avoiding purines that can trigger gout flares.

Which Supplements Are Best For Arthritis

Different people respond to joint supplements in different ways. Best advice is to try one or two for at least 6 weeks before reassessing whether you need to switch. I recommend starting with a fish oil plus glucosamine as a basic, joint-friendly plan. If this does not provide the relief you need, add in chondroitin and an additional anti-inflammatory such as turmeric, rose hip or MSM.

I recommend selecting products made to a pharmaceutical standard known as GMP which ensures they are checked for quality and purity at all stages of manufacture. Some cheap products have been found to contain little glucosamine or chondroitin, for example, and will not offer the same benefits as those providing a consistent dose.

Other Options To Ease Arthritis Pain

Theres no known cure for osteoarthritis, short of a knee or hip replacement for people with advanced disease.

And treatments to reduce symptomsincluding nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen as well as injections of steroidsoffer limited benefits and can cause side effects. So it makes sense to rely on nondrug measures when you can. Here are some of the most effective.

Weight loss. Every pound of excess weight you shed can take about 4 pounds of pressure off the knees when walking, research suggests. See our ratings and reviews of diet plans.

Physical activity. Strength training helps build up the muscles that support the affected joint. Aerobic exercise, particularly weight-bearing activities such as walking, can ease stiffness by keeping joints flexible and lubricated. But check with your doctor before starting any new workout regimen. See our ratings and reviews of ellipticals, treadmills, and pedometers.

Mechanical aids. A cane, crutch, or walker can take a load off painful knees, and insurance usually covers them if theyre medically necessary.

Heat and cold. A heating pad can ease ongoing stiffness and soreness in joints. For acute pain and swelling, switch to ice packs.

Massage. The deep-tissue variety got high marks in a 2010 survey of Consumer Reports online readers who tried it for osteoarthritis. Half said it helped a lot.

Things To Consider When Taking Joint Pain Supplements

Most joint pain supplements you see on the market are derived from natural ingredients and are completely safe. This also means you probably wont have any side effects, which is common with prescription treatments for arthritis.

Talk to your doctor before taking these supplements for joint pain, especially if you are currently taking other medications.

Another thing you need to consider before taking supplements is label transparency, i.e., that all ingredients are listed including binding ones. This is important, especially if you have certain allergies and want to make sure you dont have an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in your joint pain supplement.

    How Glucosamine Helps Osteoarthritis

Top 4 Best Supplements for Arthritis, Joint Pain Supplements 2018

Glucosamine sulfate functions as the primary building block for proteoglycans, large molecules in cartilage that give it viscoelastic properties. This molecule stimulates the formation and repair of articular cartilage. When taken orally, glucosamine sulfate is absorbed readily into the system and can be traced to cartilage as soon as four hours after consumption.

Similar to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , glucosamine sulfate has been shown to have unique anti-inflammatory effects. Additionally, in some laboratory tests, the glucosamine supplement demonstrated a protective effect on the cartilage. These studies suggest that glucosamine sulfate may inhibit the breakdown of cartilage associated with osteoarthritis and may have the potential to help build-up cartilage.1

Glucosamine hydrochloride, another form of glucosamine, is also available as a nutritional supplement, but is considered less effective for the treatment of osteoarthritis. This is because the sulfate moiety, not present in this formulation, is believed to play an important role in strengthening the cartilage and aiding in proteoglycan synthesis. This hypothesis has not yet been confirmed.

The importance of vitamin E in protecting cartilage health has been illustrated in several case-control studies. Surapaneni and Venkataramana showed that among Indian subjects , the osteoarthritic patients had lower circulating vitamin E and vitamin C, in conjunction with lower erythrocytic glutathione level and catalase activity and increased erythrocytic malondialdehyde level, glutathione transferase and peroxidase activity than healthy control . Bhattacharya et al. also obtained similar observation in their osteoarthritic patients , alongside increased ceruloplasmin, C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 . However, the oxidative status of the blood might not reflect the condition in the joint space. This was best illustrated by the study of Suantawee et al. . They found that osteoarthritic patients with KellgrenLawrence scale 34 had significantly higher plasma malondialdehyde and nitrite level, as well as lower vitamin E, Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity , and ferric reducing antioxidant power than healthy control . In the osteoarthritic patients, synovial fluid was sampled to test the correlation between circulating and synovial markers of oxidative stress. Only FRAP showed a significant correlation, but not vitamin E, malondialdehyde and TEAC , highlighting the discordance between vitamin E level and oxidative status in the circulation and in the joint space.

Joint pain formulas can reduce pain, but they cant treat specific injuries and arent as effective as anti-inflammatory drugs like morphine. According to FDA regulations, it is illegal to market a dietary supplement to treat, cure, or prevent any disease or illness.
