What Can I Take Over The Counter For Arthritis Pain

Methotrexate And Other Traditional Dmards

How To Choose Over-the-Counter Pain Medication

Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs are used used to slow or stop rheumatoid arthritis by suppressing the immune system. The generic names for commonly used DMARDs include:

  • Hydroxychloroquine

Biologic drugs target and prevent a specific reaction from happening, stopping the inflammatory process.

This class of medications, called biologic response modifiers, is technically a subset of DMARDs. They may be used with traditional DMARDs or as an alternative to them. Biologics:

  • Disrupt certain parts of the cascade of events that lead to RA inflammation and have the potential to stop the disease process.
  • Increase a persons risk of infection and tend to be expensive. Because of these potential downsides, biologics are used when methotrexate or other DMARDs prove insufficient or cause unacceptable side-effects.
  • May become less effective and/or cause worsening side effects over time. The doctor and patient can work together to monitor changes and decide if and when switching medication is advisable.

Testing for TuberculosisBefore taking any type of biologic medication, a person must be tested for tuberculosis. People who have latent tuberculosis carry the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium without having tuberculosis symptoms. If a person with latent tuberculosis takes immune-suppressing biologic medications the bacterium can multiply and cause symptomatic tuberculosis.

Topicals For Pain Relief

There are so many options for topical pain support available, and I feel like Ive tried a good variety of them:

  • Capsaicin cream
  • Icy Hot
  • Tiger Balm
  • BioFreeze
  • Arnica
  • Salonpas patches

Ive had some temporary pain relief and support from each of these, and I don’t think theres harm in trying a few different ones. My personal favorites have been Tiger Balm Active Muscle Gel and Arnica Cream . I usually keep a few different types in the house so if one isnt helpful when my pain is increasing, I have another option on hand. I like being able to target my uncomfortable joints topically rather than trying to take oral medication, wait for it to be absorbed, and then travel to the area in question.

Note: I always recommend checking with your doctor first before adding anything to your treatment regimen.

Aspirin: A Special Nsaid We No Longer Use For Pain

Aspirin is another analgesic available over-the-counter.

Its technically also a NSAID, but its chemical structure is a bit different from the other NSAIDs. This is what allows it to be effective in reducing strokes and heart attacks. It is also less likely to affect the kidneys than other NSAIDs are.

Aspirin is no longer used as an analgesic by the medical community. But many older adults still reach for aspirin to treat their aches and pains, because they are used to thinking of it as a painkiller. Aspirin is also included in certain over-the-counter medications, such as Excedrin.

Taking a very occasional aspirin for a headache or other pain is not terribly risky for most aging adults. But using aspirin more often increases the risk of internal bleeding. So, I discourage my older patients from using aspirin for pain.

Arthritis is an inflammatory disease of the joints that affects approximately 50 million Americans. There are more than 100 conditions involving swelling and pain in the joints and the tissues around the joints that fall under the descriptive umbrella of arthritis. Two main kinds of arthritis osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most prevalent. These two forms of arthritis have similar symptoms, although they have different causes. Osteoarthritis often occurs in the hands, knees, and hip joints, while rheumatoid arthritis most commonly appears in the wrists and hands. While arthritis is most prevalent in seniors aged 65 and older, arthritis can affect people of all ages, from all walks of life. In addition to pain, arthritis can affect mobility and compromise the ability to perform certain tasks. Rare But Serious Side Effects Of Nsaids

What Kind of Pain Reliever Is Best for Me?

In rare instances, NSAIDs can damage your liver and kidneys. The higher the dosage and the longer the treatment, the higher the risk. If you have liver or kidney problems, you may not be able to take NSAIDs.

An allergic reaction to these drugs is also possible, but not common. A reaction is serious if you experience:

  • wheezing
  • swelling of your face or throat
  • difficulty breathing

If you have any of these symptoms while taking an NSAID, contact your doctor right away. If you think that any of these symptoms are life-threatening, call 911.

Place an ice pack on your dogs injury if it is swollen or appears to cause pain. The ice may decrease inflammation and pain and help the leg heal. Use ice for 15 to 20 minutes at a time several times a day.

Arthritis Drugs And Kidney Disease

Do you suffer from arthritis and take over-the-counter arthritis drugs? You could be at risk of adverse drug events.

You are not alone. The most commonly used OTC arthritis drugs are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, and Naproxen. The FDA estimates that 17% of adults in the United State took Ibuprofen and 3.5% of adults took Naproxen in any given week. While these drugs are extremely effective in reducing pain and inflammation associated with arthritis, they are also responsible for many adverse drug reactions, and are associated with stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, heart attacks, heart failure and liver failure.

The label instructions for use of both Ibuprofen and Aleve recommend that you consult with your physician if you take these drugs for more than 10 days for arthritis pain. It goes on to say that the drugs temporarily relieve minor aches and pain due to—-minor pain of arthritis. Id like to emphasize the word temporary and advise all with arthritis pain that these drugs are not indicated for long term use unless supervised by your physician.

According to a recent report, the use of these NSAIDs increase the risk of acute kidney injury by 50% in the general population and patients with chronic kidney disease . The report also estimated that the incidence of acute kidney injury doubled in patients over 50 compared to those that did not take NSAIDs.

Tips On Safer Use Of Otc Painkillers

In short, the safest oral OTC painkiller for older adults is usually acetaminophen, provided you dont exceed 3,000 mg per day.

If you have any concerns about liver function or alcohol use, plan to use the medication daily on an ongoing basis, or otherwise want to err on the safer side, try to not exceed 2,000 mg per day, and seek medical input as soon as possible.

You should also be sure to bring up any chronic pain with your parents doctor. Its important to get help identifying the underlying causes of the pain. The doctor can then help you develop a plan to manage the pain.

And dont forget to ask about non-drug treatments for pain; they are often safer for older adults, but busy doctors may not bring them up unless you ask. For example, chronic pain self-management programs can be very helpful to some people.

Now if your older parent is taking acetaminophen often or every day, youll want to be sure youve accounted for all acetaminophen she might be taking. Remember, acetaminophen is often included in medications for cough and cold, and in prescription painkillers. So you need to look at the ingredients list for all medication of this type. Experts believe that half of acetaminophen overdoses are unintentional, and result from people either making mistakes with their doses or not realizing they are taking other medications containing acetaminophen.

Working Toward A Personalized Approach To Pain Management

Safely Taking and Storing OTC Pain Medication

This meta-analysis cannot tell us which of these types of medication should be prescribed for a particular patient. No study can. The person-to-person variation in the effectiveness of any KOA treatment is huge. One patient may get near-total pain relief while another is not helped at all. These findings do give clinicians a benchmark for the typical amount of pain relief that might be expected from these medications, and suggest that, since they work about equally well, the choice of which one to use will be influenced by considerations other than effectiveness. Providers and those suffering with chronic pain also need to weigh potential side effects. Treatment with oral NSAIDs can result in stomach problems like bleeding, ulcer, and stomach upset, as well as high blood pressure and kidney problems. Opioids can have side effects such as constipation, nausea, and drowsiness. As you are also likely aware, opioids are also associated with a risk of serious overdose and addiction.

Pain Control For Oa And Ra Patients

What is Voltaren Arthritis Pain Relief Gel?

Paracetamol is effective in treating certain types of OA. The drug is considered as first-line treatment for mild to moderate pain . However, OA patients often prefer NSAIDS for better pain relief . NSAIDs are targeted therapy for pain management in RA patients, but are not appropriate for long-term disease control .

Early use of DMARDs in RA patients is of high importance ; however, as pain is a major complaint in these patients, they commonly take analgesics from the very beginning. According to EULAR, symptomatic patients presenting with early arthritis should be treated with NSAIDs after careful evaluation of gastrointestinal, renal, and cardiovascular status . The BSR guideline for long-term RA management recommends a stepped approach with NSAIDs co-prescribed with a proton pump inhibitor in the short term . The NICE guideline suggests analgesics to potentially reduce the need for long-term NSAID or COX-2 inhibitor treatment .

How Is Osteoarthritis Treated

Treatment for osteoarthritis includes lifestyle changes and medications.

All patients with osteoarthritis should be enrolled in an exercise program because physical activity increases blood flow, and joints and muscles are supplied with more oxygen. Swimming, Tai Chi and weight-based exercises are usually suitable for people with osteoarthritis, although a physician should be consulted before starting any exercise program.

Weight loss can lower the risk of pain in weight-bearing joints and orthotics, devices that help to align joints – orthotic shoe inserts, splints, and braces can help with movement. Heat or cold therapy can also relieve joint swelling.

Medications for osteoarthritis may include:

  • Acetaminophen
