How Will It Affect Me
Osteoarthritis can affect people in different ways, but the most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are:

However, there are instances when patients will have symptoms that radiate either toward the hip or toward the ankle.
When the patient complains of whole leg pain, one tends to place a likely diagnosis of sciatica or lumbar radiculopathy at the top of the list.
Frequently I will see patients who either complain of pain radiating from the knee into the thigh or from the knee down toward the ankle.
More often than not, these patients will have findings consistent with insufficiency fractures of the distal femur or proximal tibia , respectively.
An insufficiency fracture is a type of stress fracture that is caused by normal stress on abnormal bone usually a porous weak bone.
It is not hard to imagine weight bearing on her fracture and having pain along the span of the whole bone that is fractured, continues Dr. Matarazzo.
This is commonly seen with arthritis of the knee. Typically this would be a lancinating pain shooting from the knee toward either the thigh or ankle, worse with weight bearing and oftentimes completely relieved with rest.
With sciatica, the sciatic nerve is subjected to compression, either by a bulging disc or the piriformis muscle.

As it does in other joints, RA can cause inflammation and stiffness in the ankle joints. Most of the inflammation comes from the autoimmune aspect of RA the immune system sends inflammatory cells to the joint, causing inflammation there.
Over time, this can affect the structure of the ankle joints, leading to permanent changes in their shape.
The ankle joint connects the leg bones to the foot. It is made up of two smaller joints that act as a hinge to move the foot. Movements such as walking rely on properly functioning ankle joints.
The bones in the ankle joint contain cartilage that protects them from rubbing against each other. RA causes this cartilage to break down over time, increasing the friction between the bones and exposing nerve endings.
This friction between bones can produce extra inflammation around the ankle joint. It can also damage the surrounding tissues that support the ankle, causing them to become weak and unstable and reducing their ability to support the joint.

If you are overweight and experiencing arthritis symptoms, it is important to alleviate as much pressure from the joints as possible. In some cases, this could mean losing weight. While this may not be a primary concern, it can help with symptom management.
Exercise is also an important part of foot arthritis symptom management. While you should avoid impact activities, like running and most sports, toe flexion stretches can alleviate some pain.
