Study : Curcumin Boosts The Action Of Steroids In Arthritis

Many a time we have received queries: whether it is safe to take turmeric with steroids and indeed it is safe to take turmeric in the diet when taking steroids as it helps in attenuating inflammation and pain.

And some individuals have benefited from this and discontinued steroid use.

This animal study published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, January 2014 shows that curcumin administered with steroid potentiates its anti-arthritic activity.

What happened in the study?

An animal model of arthritis was developed. Curcumin was administered along with low, moderate and high doses of steroid- prednisolone.

The efficacy and toxicity of the steroid were studied.

What were the results?

Induction of arthritis was marked by increased levels of inflammatory agents in the body such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukins etc.

Combination of curcumin and prednisolone had a beneficial effect on joint swelling, immune cell count and other biochemical parameters in arthritis.

Out of the different doses tested, low dose of prednisolone and curcumin worked the best.

This was demonstrated by increased inhibition of inflammatory enzymes, increase in antioxidant enzymes, body weight gain and reduced toxicity to organs.

How did this occur?

It Is An Excellent Antioxidant

Oxidative stress or imbalance between prooxidant and antioxidant agents in the body leads to the degradation of joint tissue in arthritis.

A clinical trial was conducted where the effect of curcuminoids and piperine supplementation was assessed on the antioxidant status of patients suffering from osteoarthritis.

The study lasted for 6 weeks and an increase in the level of antioxidant enzymes was observed. Researchers concluded that short term supplementation of curcuminoids alleviates oxidative stress in osteoarthritis.

What does this mean?Research shows that curcumin reduces oxidative stress and improves antioxidant defences in arthritis.

In addition, a key feature of Alzheimers disease is a buildup of protein tangles called amyloid plaques. Studies show that curcumin can help clear these plaques .

Whether curcumin can slow or even reverse the progression of Alzheimers disease in people is currently unknown and needs to be studied.

Turmerics Skin Protective Properties Benefits In Psoriatic Arthritis

Around 30% of the individuals with psoriasis develop an inflammatory condition called psoriatic arthritis. Traditionally turmeric has been used to treat various skin disorders and research now proves the potential of curcumin to aid in various skin diseases.

Psoriasis is characterised by excessive cell death in skin cells compared to the growth rate of new skin cells. Curcumin is found to reverse such rate of cell death in psoriasis.

Animal study shows that curcumin can be taken safely with cyclosporine, an immune suppressing drug used to treat psoriasis.

What does this mean?Curcumins anti-inflammatory and skin protective properties can prevent inflammation occurring in skin in psoriasis to spread to joints in psoriatic arthritis.

Curcumin Exerts Protective Effects On The Joints

For people with the family history of rheumatoid arthritis, the occurrence of this disease is more likely.

Such people are more at risk of getting their immune systems turned against their own tissues at any point of life and thus, should be prepared enough.

Since it cant be detected that the person is going to have rheumatoid arthritis at some point in time in the life, it is better to take harmless precautionary measures anyway especially for those having this disease in the family.

Research has shown that regular consumption of turmeric in regulated amounts protects the tissues from releasing inflammatory molecules and attracting their immune system to attack.

Curcumin from turmeric also reduces the amounts of cytokines in the blood specifically targeted to the joints.

In other words, curcumin prevents the turning of the immune system against ones own body tissues by exerting protective effects on both the tissue and the immune system.

In this research, it was also found that a number of curcuminoids found in turmeric extracts, especially turmeric oils are responsible for this protective effect on the joints.

Curcuminoids are the different derivatives of curcumin, out of which three have been identified as most effective.

In one study, 18 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were divided into groups. One group was given 1200mg / day curcumin and the other 300mg/day of phenylbutazone.

Remedies Now Target Inflammation As Well As The Ache

Is Turmeric Good For Rheumatoid Arthritis

by Barbara Stepko, AARP, February 1, 2019

En español | We all know what its like to wake up in the morning with an aching back or stiff knees. But for those with chronic inflammatory arthritis, a disease in which our immune system starts attacking healthy cells by mistake manifesting in widespread pain and red, swollen, inflamed joints the discomfort is very different. The distinction has to do with the pervasiveness of the experience, says Nortin Hadler, M.D., emeritus professor of medicine and microbiology/immunology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Without medicine, people with rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis are lucky to feel good ever during the day. It is remittent: There are good days, and there are bad days.

Getting the disease under control with drugs, such as disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs or biologics, can significantly reduce the pain. But while medication these days is very effective, its not completelyeffective, says Nancy Shadick, M.D., a rheumatologist at Bostons Brigham and Womens Hospital and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School. Youre dealing with the intermittent flares or some ongoing pain or disability.

Prevents Cartilage Degradation And Protects Cartilage

Another big benefit of turmeric? The curcumin in it has a protective effect on the bodys cartilage. The wearing down of the cartilage is central to the progression of osteoarthritis. By preventing joint cartilage degeneration, curcumin can help ease symptoms and may even slow down the worsening of your condition.

Curcumin is also said to reduce cartilage inflammation a problem experienced in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis and boost the activity of chondrocytes that are responsible for creating and maintaining the cartilage matrix.8 Treatment with curcumin may, therefore, help regenerate cartilage by creating the right environment.9

Turmeric And Arthritis In Human Studies

Curcumin has been shown to have a beneficial effect for both RA and osteoarthritis . Two small studies of people with RA showed that curcumin was as effective as NSAIDs or more so, showed no adverse effects, and reduced C-reactive protein levels. Its important to note that larger studies with a double-blind design are needed.

Turmeric For Arthritis: 6 Reasons You Should Use This Natural Painkiller

You may know turmeric as an oriental spice that gives Asian food color and flavor, but did you know it has an illustrious history of use in traditional medicine as a remedy for everything from wounds and acne to bronchitis and arthritis? The basis for these uses lies in turmerics anti-inflammatory properties, mostly attributed to a chemical called curcumin.

Arthritis is an umbrella term for disorders of the joints. Of the nearly 100 types of arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout are the most common. While the symptoms for all three are pain and stiffness, the causes are different. While osteoarthritis is caused by an age-related wear and tear of the cartilage in the joints, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition. Gout or gouty arthritis is caused by the accumulation of urate crystals in the joints due to high levels of uric acid in the body. Research shows that its beneficial to use turmeric for arthritis since this herb sometimes works as efficiently as standard drugs.1

Arthritis, in general, refers to joint inflammation which causes swelling and pain. Rheumatoid Arthritis is different from other types of arthritis because the joint inflammation occurs on both sides of the body both elbows, both knees, both wrists, etc. Overall, one percent of the population is affected by RA, but its safe to assume that 100% of those that suffer from RA want relief.

There are a number of treatment options for Rheumatoid Arthritis, including medications, physical therapy, and exercise. In more severe cases, surgery might be necessary to reduce pain and control inflammation. In all cases, the earlier the treatment is administered after diagnosis, the better the results. In some instances, progression of the disease can be slowed down or stopped altogether.
