There is some evidence that moderate drinking may help you from getting RA.

A Swedish study that included more than 34,000 women showed that the ones who drank more than four glasses of alcohol per week were less likely to get RA. That√Ęs compared to women who drank less than one glass of alcohol per week or who never drank. When the researchers looked at what happened over 10 years, the effect was even bigger. Women who said they usually had more than three glasses of alcohol per week were about half as likely to get RA as those who never drank.

A U.S. study of more than 120,000 female registered nurses showed that women who drank a beer two to four times a week were about a third as likely to get RA as women who never drank beer.

The Effect Is In The Mix

The study didnt look into why the results turned out as they did, but the researchers proposed a few factors. For one, as we all know, beer drinking can lead to a beer bellyweight around the middle that puts stress on the knees. But the study authors did not make correlations between weight and alcohol consumption. Beer also increases blood levels of uric acid, which can worsen osteoarthritis by crystalizing and settling in joints.

Regarding wineits antioxidant content may be cartilage-protective. Wine also contains substances that increase favorable bacteria in the gut, which support the immune system and reduce overall inflammation, according to the researchers.

Additional research is needed to confirm the study findings and really pinpoint why wine and beer drinkers have drastically different risk potentials for osteoarthritis. But the results also lend more weight to wines many health benefits.

The new study, published in the July issue of Atherosclerosis :117-23), found that both alcoholic beverages had anti-inflammatory effects but when people drank red wine levels of inflammatory substances were reduced to a much greater extent.

These inflammatory substances are risk factors in the development of heart disease and stroke, the biggest killers in the western world.

The researchers from the University of Barcelona noted that red wine contains many complex compounds including polyphenols that are absent from gin.

Its clear from these results that while drinking some form of alcohol lowers inflammatory markers, red wine has a much greater effect than gin, said Dr Emanuel Rubin, distinguished professor of pathology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

Red wine has long been associated with a lowered risk of heart attack and stroke the so-called French paradox, but research into other alcohols including beer has also shown benefits to heart health.

The Jefferson-led team used inflammatory biomarkers in the blood to compare the effects of red wine and gin on heart health. High levels of c-reactive proteins and other markers of inflammation have been implicated in coronary artery disease and ischaemic stroke, but according to Dr Rubin, no trials have compared the anti-inflammatory effect of red wine to that of alcoholic beverages with low levels of polyphenols.

Alcohol Must Be Limited

He suggests moderate consumption of red wine, or white wines made with skin contact, also known as “orange wines,” since resveratrol is most abundant in the grape skins and seeds.
