Pineapple: This Fruit’s Enzymes Can Decrease Swelling

When You Drink Pickle Juice Every Day This Is What Happens To Your Body

Pineapple is rich in vitamin C and the enzyme bromelain, which has been linked to decreased pain and swelling in both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, Sandon says. So, add this tropical fruit to your diet every chance you get. Try it cubed in fruit salad, baked in savory dishes, blended into a smoothie, or added to stir-fries to give a sweet-and-sour zing.

Bromelain is also available in supplement form, but check with your doctor before taking it because it can increase the risk of bleeding, especially if you also take blood thinners such as Plavix , Coumadin, or aspirin. Bromelain may also interfere with the action of antibiotics and sedatives.

Do You Have To Have Turmeric To Make Refrigerator Bread & Butter Pickles

There are substitutes such as saffron , annatto, or safflower but turmeric is hands down the best option. Turmeric is a spice that’s very closely related to ginger. It’s used in lots of Indian cuisine and has a strong earthy flavor. It’s the bright yellow of the turmeric that gives pickles their color. All pickles have the same basic ingredients: vinegar, sugar, salt, turmeric. Other spices/herbs can be added in for different flavor profiles. Turmeric is an antioxidant, improves heart health, and may slow Alzheimer’s and cancer. It’s also a strong anti-inflammatory that may help improve the symptoms of depression and arthritis. But enough about turmeric. Want to know why saffron is more expensive than gold? Saffron comes from the saffron crocus flower. Each flower has three red stigmas that’s the saffron. It takes about 170,000 HAND-PICKED flowers to make 1 pound of saffron – and that pound could cost up to $5,000. Want to know more? Read this Business Insider article. The next most expensive spice is vanilla but I’ll save that for another post.

Ginger: Spice Up Your Dishes To Turn Down The Flame

Like onions, ginger contains compounds that function in much the same way as anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen. This versatile root adds flavor too. Add fresh peeled ginger to stir-fries, eat pickled ginger along with salmon sushi, or puree some and add it to an acorn squash soup.

Ginger supplements can also help reduce inflammation, but check with your doctor before taking them, Sandon says. Too much ginger can lead to thinning of the blood, which can be dangerous if you are taking certain drugs, like Coumadin . It can also decrease blood sugar levels, raising the risk of hypoglycemia. In addition, ginger may lower blood pressure, which could affect those taking high blood pressure medication.

It Helps You Stay Hydrated

For most people, drinking water for hydration after a workout is fine. Water is probably all you need if youre exercising moderately or for an hour or less.

But its a different story if youre exercising hard, exercising for longer than an hour at a time, or exercising in hot climates.

Drinking something with sodium and potassium can help you get hydrated faster. Sodium is an electrolyte that you lose when you sweat. Potassium is another electrolyte lost in sweat.

Pickle juice contains a lot of sodium. It also has some potassium. After a sweaty or lengthy exercise session, sipping some pickle juice can help your body recover to its normal electrolyte levels more quickly.

Watching your sodium intake or on a low-sodium diet? Be sure to check with your doctor and dietitian about pickle juice before drinking it.

Theres an old saying you are what you eat. But what you drink, and how much you drink, can have an enormous effect on your body and health, too. Beverage Basics Start every day with a glass of water before you eat any food, since most people wake up a bit dehydrated, says Sonya Angelone, a dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Its also best to stick with water throughout the day, she says. The typical recommendation is eight glasses a day. In general, avoid soda since it can be full of sugar, aspartame and phosphoric acid. The latter can negatively affect your bodys ability to absorb calcium. Water can get a bit boring, but there are other ways to stay healthy and hydrated. How To Make Bread & Butter Pickles

When I started this I swore I wouldn’t write a lot – “no one reads it… they jump to the recipe… blah blah blah…” it’s just that I love pickles and am fascinated by the whole saffron thing. Lets get started.

First you need some beautiful pickling cucumbers. They are much smaller and have a thicker skin than a regular cucumber, but if you can’t find them – that’s perfectly OK, small cucumbers will work.

Slice your cucumbers into ¼” thick slices. Cover them the salt, give a toss or two, cover and let sit in the fridge for at least an hour.

If you have one of these fun crinkle cutters – use it, if not, that’s ok too.

Once your pickles have chilled out for a while, rinse them really well to get the salt off and then toss the onion in with the cucumbers.

Next, gather your brine ingredients. You’ll need both white & apple cider vinegars, both granulated and dark brown sugars , whole grain mustard or mustard seeds, celery seed and turmeric. Put them all in a medium saucepan and over medium heat, bring to a simmer making sure all the sugar has dissolved.

Finally, pour the hot vinegar brine over the cucumber and onion slices and let cool at room temp for about an hour. Put them in an airtight container and refrigerate overnight. I suspect that they’d keep in the fridge for up to 3 months, but they never go that long without being eaten in my house so I’ve never tested the theory.

You want to find a pickle that isn’t quite so high in sodium. Just one medium pickle contains up to 785 milligrams. Consuming an excessive amount of sodium is bad for the heart and body, so do be sure to find an option that contains far less than the average amount. Look for reduced sodium labels to cut down.

Do choose a pickle as an occasional snack. A medium pickle has just 7 calories. Eat it slowly and you’ll satisfy your hunger. Whole pickles are thick and have a satisfying crunch that make them worthwhile to eat.

You also might consider making your own pickles. This will reduce some of the sodium content and ill effects caused by ones sold in stores. You can find a recipe that suits you and know exactly what is going into the process. Start with organic cucumbers. You can add whatever seasonings you want, such as dill, garlic, pickling spices, or chili. Just one teaspoon of salt per every cup of water you use is all that’s needed.

Don’t

Don’t eat so many pickles at once, or eat them every day. The high sodium content is bad for the heart. The acidity of pickles can also be harsh on the stomach. Don’t eat pickles if you have an ulcer. They can cause further damage. It is also possible for foods rich in salt to cause stomach cancer. Steer clear if you already have other risk factors, such as a family history of cancer or you are a smoker.

Pickle Juice Can Help You Recover After Exercise

Electrolytes help maintain the fluid balance in your body and keep all systems firing. But when you sweat, you risk losing too many. The antidote?

Pickle juice contains electrolytes in the form of a lot of sodium and some potassium and magnesium. Thats why you can use it as a natural electrolyte, says Skoda. It can help to rehydrate after exercise.

To get the most benefit, Skoda says to choose a vinegar-based pickle without yellow dye and preservatives. Using pickle juice as an electrolyte may work well for people who:

  • Have a chronic condition that requires you to take in more sodium.
  • Dont get enough sodium in their diet.

But using pickle juice as your go-to recovery drink isnt for everyone. The recommendation is to have no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium each day. And 3 ounces of pickle juice gives you 900 mg right there, depending on the brand, she says. You can find electrolyte supplements that only have 150 mg of sodium and more potassium and magnesium instead.

May Promote Weight Loss But It’s Not Recommended

The vinegar in many pickle juices may help with weight loss as some research has shown that vinegar can reduce appetite, Black says.

However, there are three big issues to be aware of with this:

  • Vinegar reduces appetite, so it’s generally not well tolerated.
  • In addition, most of the research on vinegar and weight loss involves apple cider vinegar, which isn’t typically used in pickle juice.
  • Lastly, most studies on weight loss and vinegar involve drinking vinegar before each meal. Consuming that much pickle juice would result in too much sodium intake, so this isn’t a recommended weight loss strategy, Black says.
