What Drugs Interact With Lyrica Vs Gabapentin
Lyrica drug interactions
- Alcohol and drugs that cause sedation may increase the sedative effects of pregabalin.
- Pioglitazone and rosiglitazone cause weight gain, fluid retention, and possibly heart failure. Therefore, combining pregabalin with these drugs may increase the occurrence of weight gain and fluid retention.
Gabapentin drug interactions
- Antacids reduce the concentration of gabapentin in blood. Therefore, gabapentin should be administered 2 hours or more after taking antacids.
- Morphine significantly increases blood concentrations of gabapentin and may increase central nervous system-related adverse events associated with gabapentin.
Rated For Moderate Pain Report
I had been taking gabapentin successfully for over a year, switched to lyrica to get better back/nerve pain relief. I quit after two weeks of extreme fatigue and depression/irritability. Couldn’t tolerate it, went back to gabapentin. Unfortunate, because the pain relief was excellent, but I can’t live as an angry/sad zombie.

Where Does It Fit
There is no generally accepted ‘stepwise’ approach to treating neuropathic pain. There is an array of drugs with limited evidence for differences in efficacy, and often with troublesome adverse effects. Drug therapy is best used as part of a multifaceted, multidisciplinary, active self-management approach to the physical, psychological, social and vocational impacts of neuropathic pain.5 Assess the nature of the pain experience and inform people of realistic outcomes with treatment.6,7 The primary goal in most cases is to make the pain tolerable not usually to eliminate the pain.6 Aim for medium-term drug therapy with a drug holiday after 6 months. Patients who relapse during a drug holiday can resume treatment.
Guidelines recommend starting drug therapy for neuropathic pain with a TCA or an antiepileptic agent .6-12 The dose of the drugs can be escalated at weekly intervals if tolerated, but it may take several weeks to achieve clinical efficacy.

Celebrex And Lyrica For Arthritis
Are you worried about the side effects that may occur from taking Celebrex and Lyrica for arthritis? If so, youre not alone, as the list of sides effects for both products is quite daunting. Celebrex is related to the drug Vioxx, which itself was taken off the shelf because of its attribution to a number of deaths.
Here is the official list of side effects for Celebrex:Important Safety InformationCardiovascular Risk CELEBREX may cause an increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, myocardial infarction, and stroke, which can be fatal. All nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may have a similar risk. This risk may increase with duration of use. Patients with CV disease or risk factors for CV disease may be at greater risk. CELEBREX is contraindicated for the treatment of perioperative pain in coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
Both Celebrex and Lyrica are quite popular, and of course should you wish to explore getting off of them and trying something else, you should do so in consultation with your personal health physician this is especially important in the case of Lyrica due to the possibility of resultant seizures. There are natural alternatives, such as glucosamine and chondroitin, and these alternatives lack the large lists of nasty side effects. In fact, a recent study found that these two supplements matched Celebrex in the positive qualities for treating arthritis.

A Brief Introduction To Lyrica
Lyrica is widely known as one of the go-to drugs prescribed by doctors for numerous diseases. It boasts an incredible success and also failure rate that has been in continuation since it was first released to the public in 2005. After 15 years of studies, clinical trials, and research, inventor Richard Silverman had become a success both in the field of medicine and commercially totaling in $1.2 billion in sales in 2006. This number has increased over time as Lyrica is now prescribed for more and more diseases and disorders. If youd like to hear what the FDA have to say about Lyrica, read more here.
Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathic Pain
Earlier this year, a Consensus Guideline on the management of diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain was published, the first of its kind. Treatment of DPNP may mirror other peripheral neuropathic pain syndromes, and, therefore, this guideline may assist in managing other similar patients.
A goal of 100% pain relief is ideal but often unrealistic. Many patients will only experience a 30%-50% reduction in pain relief however, this may enable the patient to return to social activities or work and improve their quality of life. Hospitalists and other members of the healthcare team must keep in mind that the patients treatment goals may significantly differ from their own goals of therapy. In managing these complex patients we must bear in mind that complete pain relief may not be attainable. We must also continue to communicate with our patients and provide them with information on what is known and unknown about the mechanisms and treatment of neuropathic pain. By developing and maintaining these patient relationships, our patients will apt to be more satisfied with their treatment, even if they do not have 100% improvement.
In DPNP , it is important for the patient to play an active role in their care . If treatment plans are not for FDA-approved uses, obtain patient consent. Remember, patients now have access to approved labeling via the internet. If they feel that their healthcare providers are not being above aboard, lack of trust can significantly affect care.

What Is Known About This Drug
Pregabalin is a structural analogue of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid . It appears to have a similar spectrum of benefits and harms to that of other adjuvant analgesics used to treat neuropathic pain. It is clinically superior to placebo, and indirect comparisons suggest it is non-inferior for efficacy and safety to amitriptyline and gabapentin.
What Are The Uses For Lyrica Vs Gabapentin
- Blurred vision
- Viral infection
Antiepileptic medications have been associated with an increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior. Anyone considering the use of antiepileptic drugs must balance this risk of suicide with the clinical need. Patients who are started on therapy should be closely observed for clinical worsening, suicidal thoughts, or unusual changes in behavior.

Pregnancy And Fertility Concerns
People who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should notify their doctor before starting the drug. No adequate, well-controlled studies have been conducted in pregnant humans, and use is only appropriate when the potential benefit to the person who is pregnant outweighs the possible risk to the fetus.
Male fertility may also be impacted by taking Lyrica, so this should be discussed with your doctor. Studies showed that the drug made male animals less fertile. Also, birth defects occurred in the offspring of male animals who were treated with pregabalin.
Before You Take Lyrica
Always make sure your doctor knows about all the other medications you are taking. This includes over-the-counter drugs, as well as herbs and supplements. Some prescription medicines may interact with Lyrica and may lead to dangerous side effects. Such drugs include:
- Blood pressure medicines called ACE inhibitors taking Lyrica with these medicines increases your chance for swelling and hives.
- Diabetes medicines Avandia or Actos if you take these drugs with Lyrica, you may have a higher risk for swelling or weight gain.
- Narcotic pain medicines , anxiety medicines , and tranquilizers combining these drugs with Lyrica increases your chances for dizziness and sleepiness.
- Sleep medicines make you nod off, and Lyrica can cause drowsiness. Combining the two can be dangerous.
Do not drink alcohol when on Lyrica. Doing so can increase Lyrica’s side effects and make you dangerously sleepy.
Also tell your doctor if you have any other medical conditions, including:
- Bleeding disorders or low platelet counts

Tramadol can be considered as a third-line treatment for refractory neuropathic pain.6-12 However, other opioids are not recommended without further pain-medicine specialist input due to the problems with tolerance and dependence.6-12 There is limited evidence for use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors in the treatment of neuropathic pain, and further research is required to establish their role.13

I Lyrica Has An Incredibly High Bioavailability
Pregabalins bioavailability is quite high. This means that the majority of the drug pregabalin is more likely to enter the circulatory system as opposed to the other ingredients. In turn, the effects of pregabalin are more likely to be felt and noticed be it good or bad. This is often why you see so many people pro-Lyrica and opposed to Lyrica. It can have profound health benefits if found to be effective and it can also feel quite terrible if it isnt for you. There isnt much middle ground because the bioavailability is so high .

My OH was on this for quite a while, but I persuaded him to come off it. He was very off balance and not really with it at all .
It took a while to get off it completely, as you have to cut down very gradually and over a period of time.
I was not happy him being given such a strong drug that was originally for a completely different use.
