The pill most often prescribed for knee pain acetaminophen may not help at all, researchers reported Monday.
The new study of what works for arthritis pain in the knee came up with some surprising results. The most common treatments often may not help much, and even a placebo injection of salt water provides more pain relief than any pill.
The findings go against what many doctors have long believed, although they didnt surprise veteran knee surgeons, who know pain relief varies greatly from one patient to another.
All treatments except acetaminophen showed clinically significant improvement from baseline pain.”
Dr. Raveendhara Bannuru and colleagues at Tufts Medical Center near Boston looked at thousands of studies on various treatments for knee pain, from acetaminophen the active ingredient in Tylenol to ibuprofen to steroid injections.
Finding the scientific truths is tricky. Theres not much incentive for drug companies to test generic, over-the-counter drugs such as naproxen, and theres also not much reason to test an injection of a steroid against a generic treatment such as hyaluronic acid, a kind of joint lubricant.
But the team came up with 137 studies covering 33,000 people that met some high standards theyd been blinded, meaning the doctors didnt know which treatment a patient actually got as they evaluated pain, stiffness and range of motion.
And most compared treatment to placebo a dummy pill or dummy injection.

Although meloxicam is effective in relieving pain, swelling, and tenderness caused by arthritis conditions, it does have some side effects that users should be aware of. Common side effects of meloxicam include:

Opioids Not Best Option For Back Pain Arthritis

TUESDAY, March 6, 2018 — Risky opioids are no better at controlling chronic back or arthritispain than non-opioid drugs, including Tylenol or Motrin, new research finds.
With opioid overdose deaths rising in the United States, the findings suggest addictive medications like oxycodone or morphine don’t have to be the first choice against crippling arthritis pain or chronic backache.
“We found that opioids had no advantages over non-opioid medications for pain, function or quality of life in patients with low back pain and osteoarthritis pain,” said study lead author Dr. Erin Krebs.
“This is important information for physicians to share with patients who are considering opioids,” added Krebs. She’s an investigator with the Minneapolis VA Center for Chronic Disease Outcomes Research.
Not only does the study suggest switching to opioids probably won’t help, but Krebs said the prescription painkillers will probably cause unpleasant side effects.
“Instead, they should consider trying other non-opioid medications or non-medication treatments,” Krebs suggested.
Long-term back pain hampers 26 million Americans aged 20 to 64, the American Academy of Pain Medicine has found. And roughly 30 million adults have pain from osteoarthritis, the wear-and-tear form of the disease, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
That’s because opioid medications, while promising significant pain control, come with substantial risks.

Unquestionably, the FDAs plan to reclassify hydrocodone-acetaminophen combinations from Schedule III to Schedule II status,1 intended to address the increased abuse and overdose deaths related to these drugs, will make life more difficult for those rheumatology patients who rely on Vicodin or similar drugs for chronic pain. These are the preferred opioids among risk-averse users such as women, the elderly, and non-injecting users — just the types of patients most likely to see a rheumatologist.2 Almost concurrent with the plan to up-rank the hydrocodone combinations, the FDA announced the long-awaited approval of Zohydro ER, a long-acting form of hydrodone which has the added advantage for rheumatology patients of not being combined with acetaminophen, and thus less likely to have gastrointestinal effects. But Zohydro ER was approved initially as a Schedule II drug, so the same conditions will apply, and the Agency may be reconsidering the approval in response to a letter sent earlier this month by 29 Attorneys General who are concerned about its increased narcotic strength and lack of abuse-deterrent properties.
