Before applying any new liniment all over your horse’s body, be sure to test it in a small area first. If there aren’t any reactions, you can start applying it on your horse’s legs and then begin working your way up. Rubbing the liniment on your horse’s lower legs is a great practice to incorporate after your daily rides.

After really intense workouts, you can make a liniment bath by diluting some of the product in water and then giving your horse a full-body massage to help them recover.

Chapman’s Is Helping The Healing Process

“My horse pulled a flexor tendon and has had a lot of heat and swelling in that leg. He’s on stall rest, and I take him out for hand walks daily. Before we go, I spray Chapman’s Premium on him, and when we return I cold hose him. Even after cold hosing, there is a tremendous amount of heat in his leg still. I spray Chapman’s Premium on him again, and am simply amazed at how quickly it pulls the heat out of his leg. I thought it was just me, so asked my trainer the next time I sprayed him to check it. She confirmed that Chapman’s Premium had decreased the heat in his leg considerably. There’s a slight swelling still there, but I know that Chapman’s is helping the healing process.”

How Is Horse Liniment Helpful To Humans

Horse liniment as the name suggests is a recipe used to cure ailments related to horses like joint pains, muscle aches and even arthritis. However, since a long time, tests are being conducted and this has also resulted as an effective balm for human beings as well.

While horse is known for its speed and power, the muscular relativity of horse and human are quite similar, especially when it comes to tendon, ligaments and joints. There was much discussion about the usage of horse liniment over human beings, but at the end the tasks both do are equally similar, that is running and jumping.

Coping With Arthritis In Horses

Arthritis is an unwelcome diagnosis for any horse, regardless of his discipline or occupation. Whether the condition appears suddenly after trauma or gradually with worsening stiffness, it means the same thing: Chronic inflammation has led to permanent degradation of the cartilage in a horse’s joints.

And the damage is irreversible: “The reality is that you’re not going to fix the joint or cure arthritis,” says Margaret Brosnahan, DVM, Assistant Professor of Equine Medicine at Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine. “Your goal is to reduce the inflammation, pain and further damage.”

Dire as that sounds, however, current research is yielding new treatments and investigating management techniques that can help horses work longer and live more comfortably with arthritis. Here’s an overview of how arthritis develops, how it can be managed and the treatments available for it.

A Cascade Effect A horse’s knees, hocks and pasterns are designed to flex, compress and extend hundreds or thousands of times each day, for years on end–all while supporting his weight and enduring concussive forces.

As a horse moves, the flexing and compression can produce minute damage within the joint structures that triggers mild inflammatory responses to make the repairs. Normally, the body’s own defenses control inflammation and the joint remains healthy and sound.

Easing Equine Aches With Liniment

Old-time horsemen relied on liquid suspensions of herbal extracts known as liniments to ease their horses’ aching muscles, tendons and joints. Their liniment recipes were often closely guarded secrets passed from generation to generation.

Case in point: Absorbine Veterinary Liniment, which was invented by Mary Ida and Wilbur F. Young just before the turn of last the century. Wilbur delivered cargo with a wagon and a team of horses. Mary Ida was an avid horse enthusiast and cared for all of their horses. Wilburs team of horses would get tired after long days of pulling freight and often would be too sore the next day to pull cargo as effectively.

In those days, it was common to “blister” the skin using a caustic agent if a horse had stiffness or soreness. This caused blood to flood the area, speeding recovery of the muscles and connective tissues underneath. Harsh and uncomfortable for the horse, this practice also necessitated two to three days of recovery. Deciding there must be a more humane way to relieve sore muscles, Mary Ida formulated a time-honored blend of aromatic and essential oils that remains a family secret to this day. The Youngs named it Absorbine Liniment.

Enter the 21st century, and modern liniments are better than ever. They’re also available in a wide range of formulas for specific purposes.

Lenny And Miss Margie

While waiting for my haircut appointment with Jessica at Union Street Barber Shop the other day, I had a chance to chat with Lennie DeVillier, who was just leaving. Lenny was a loan officer at St. Landry Bank back in my early days as attorney for the bank, and we reminisced briefly.

Both he and I have fond memories of Marjorie Fa-Kouri, who was the banks longest-serving employee at the time. I think she still holds the record. Miss Margie taught me a lot about banking law, the practical kind that you dont learn in law school.

She always called me Little Ed, the only person ever to apply that adjective to me. She was charming, courteous and always correct. She could tell the New Orleans bankers how the cow ate the cabbage without ever directly informing them that they were wrong.

She retired a while back, and I miss her.

Lenny told me that he is going through the retirement process as a financial adviser with Edward Jones, and he seemed to be pleased with the idea of retiring. And then we did what people of a certain age do we discussed the pros and cons of Medicare.

Enjoy your retirement, Lenny.

Manna Pro 1000193 Topical Analgesic Veterinary Liniment

Absorbine Veterinary Liniment Gel for Horses Pain Reliever

Though the Manna topical analgesic veterinary liniment is an effective product, its not quite as strong as other liniments, which is part of why it just missed earning a top-three recommendation from us. But theres a hidden blessing here, which is that this formula is gentle enough to use on dogs. This also means its less effective for your horse, so if your horse is suffering from a lot of pain or swelling, you might want to opt for a stronger formula.

This liniment contains menthol and eucalyptus to improve circulation. It comes in a lotion form, which is easy enough to apply since its not runny or liquid. That said, its pretty greasy. After applying it, youll have a greasy film covering your hands thats difficult to wash off, so we recommend using gloves whenever working with this stuff.
