Dmso: Extensively Researched Criminally Ignored

Dimethyl sulfoxide is an anti-inflammatory and analgesic compound that holds promise in managing a wide range of debilitating health conditions. DMSO is an approved pharmacological agent in more than 125 countries, and its safety and therapeutic effects are backed by nearly 50 years of research and more than 10,000 scientific articles on its biological implications.

Unfortunately, the vast health-promoting potential of DMSO has gone unfulfilled in America, suppressed by a combination of bureaucratic ineptitude and pharmaceutical industry lobbying. In the United States today, DMSO is approved to treat only one medical condition: interstitial cystitis, or chronic inflammation of the bladder wall. Recent findings on DMSOs ability to help manage the effects of head injury have renewed interest in the many potential therapeutic applications of this versatile compound.

Healing For Back And Arthritis Pain

Dimethylsulfoxide And Methylsulfonylmethane And For The Treatment Of Arthritis

Methylsulfonylmethane has enjoyed a recent surge in interest as an arthritis remedy. This follows the 1999 publication of The Miracle of MSM1 as well as recent media attention to actor James Coburn, who publicly offered his personal testimonial as to MSMs efficacy for his rheumatoid arthritis . Similar anecdotes can be found on some of the more than 800 Web sites devoted to MSM, but most of these sites simply offer home delivery of MSM tablets or lotions. Vendors market MSM for a variety of conditions, including RA, osteoarthritis , fibromyalgia, gout, constipation, allergies, dyspepsia, parasitic infections, cancer prevention, and snoring. However, clinical data of any sort regarding its appropriate indications or use are distinctly lacking.

Historical Perspective

MSM is an odorless, white, crystalline, water-soluble powder that is the irreversible oxidation product of dimethylsulfoxide . MSM is also known as crystalline DMSO and dimethyl sulfone.

Mechanism of Action

One abstract has reported on a reduction in synovial proliferation in DMSO- and MSM-treated MLR-lpr mice that are prone to develop a lupus-like autoimmune disease.9 Fewer mice treated with solutions of either DMSO or MSM showed the severe histological changes associated with inflammatory arthritis than those receiving plain water, but no statistical analysis of these results was performed.

DMSO Gel 8oz Dimethyl Sulfoxide Arthritis Pain & Swelling

DMSO is a hygroscopic substance, suggesting it brings in water. This home makes the substance specifically flexible. It can minimize edema in inflamed limbs and is typically utilized as part of a sweat to fight equipping up. DMSO can likewise minimize swelling in the brain and spine, which can be actually lifesaving in illness like West Nile sleeping sickness. DMSO might be utilized to draw fluids out of the lungs in cases of severe lung edema.

Due to the fact that it pulls water from tissues, DMSO has a diuretic impact, suggesting it makes a horse urinate more. This can assist flush toxic substances from the body faster. With this action in mind, DMSO is typically offered intravenously in the treatment of cantharidin poisoning , to decrease the impact of the toxic substance on the kidneys and digestive system. After episodes of binding, DMSO might assist horses get rid of waste items of muscle breakdown through their urine faster. The diuretic action of DMSO, nevertheless, can make it hazardous for horses who are dehydrated or in shock. It can even more dehydrate these animals or alarmingly lower their high blood pressure.

Why Does The Body Need Sulfur

The body uses sulfur to continually create new healthy cells to replace old ones. Without it, the body will produce weak dysfunctional cells. Sulfur is needed to maintain cell membrane permeability. This is important for detoxification: to ensure, that nutrients are delivered into the cells, and toxins and waste products can exit the cells. Sulfur is essential for the formation and maintenance of connective tissue, to combat inflammation, support a strong healthy immune system.

Dmso May Provide Pain Relief On Its Own

Although its commonly mixed with compounds to provide pain relief, some studies suggest that DMSO alone has analgesic properties. Research shows that DMSO slows or blocks conduction of impulses along nerve cells, which in effect reduces pain from musculoskeletal injuries, postoperative incisions and other sources. Relief is only temporarylasting up to a few hoursbecause as the DMSO dissipates, normal nerve function returns. It can be combined with other pain-relieving drugs, however, to extend the analgesic action.

If it seems like DMSO has a variety of purported actions, thats true. Its nothing if not versatile. Some applications of DMSO combine all of these: For instance, it is often used in surgical colic cases to reduce the risk of tissue adhesions due to inflammation and poor circulation some surgeons think that it may also provide some pain relief in the hours following surgery.

How To Use Dmso For Back Pain

After taking Xrays with my first chiropractor after a bad fall, he showed me how I had almost no cushioning between my discs and that he estimated I had 6 more months without pain before I felt it. Well, 5 1/2 months later I had what felt like a toothache on each side of my lower back. I was like, hell to the no and ran for my DMSO bottle.

I like to use it straight and not watered down. I use a thin layer of Castor Oil first as it is the only oil viscous enough to protect the skin. I started with 7 drops on each side, 2x per day. DMSO actually heals on a molecular level, so I needed less and less as time went on.

A few weeks ago I was telling a friend about what DMSO did for me, and suddenly realized I had not put any DMSO on my back in 2 months! So from now on, I will just apply a maintenance dose 1x a month to keep things good. So, know how much you started with and be prepared to cycle down by either using fewer drops per treatment or skipping days, etc. Its not like a big Harma med where you have to take it forever and usually need more to get the same result, DMSO is the opposite!!

Happy healing, everybody!

Does DSMO actually help discs repair themselves? Have you had an x-ray that shows changes in your back, or is DMSO just changing the nerves that are signaling pain?

What brand and concentration of DMSO are you using? Only externally or internally as well?

Thank you.

Do I Need To Supplement With Organic Sulphur

We get sulphur by eating the plants, in turn, they get sulphur from the soil via the sulphur cycle.

A generation ago, we switched from manure as a fertiliser to chemical based fertilisers..this has led to the mass destruction of the sulphur cycle in agriculture. We now know that this has created one of the biggest global deficiencies ever known a sulphur deficiency.

The situation is chronic, so Im sad to admit that it isnt always possible to get what we need from diet alone which is especially the case the sicker you are.

Supplementing with organic sulphur is not only a good idea..I think its pretty crucial for most of us.

MSM Most people will have heard of the nutritional supplement, MSM. Well, MSM is made from DMSO.

Both DMSO and MSM contain organic sulphur molecules in recent years, MSM has become one of the hottest selling nutritional supplements as swarms of people with health problems report fantastic results, some that borderline on the miraculous.

The Therapeutic Properties Of Dmso Were Discovered More Or Less By Accident

A byproduct of paper production, DMSO was first developed as an industrial solvent. As people worked with the chemical, they noticed that if they spilled a bit of DMSO on their hands a distinct garlicky taste would be on their tongue shortly thereafter. This intrigued chemists, who began researching how the liquid could so quickly pass through skin and mucosa, but the work was generally limited to exploring non-medical applications.

Then, in the 1960s, Stanley Jacob, MD, began investigating DMSO as a preservative for organs destined for transplants. Work done in his laboratory soon sparked a rush of research into DMSOs possible medical uses.

Dmso Modulates Both Bacterial And Viral Stimulated Cytokines

To expand on these findings we used Luminex technology to determine the effect of DMSO on the E. coli-stimulated secretion of a total of 15 cytokines/chemokines from normal human whole blood cells. As shown in Fig 1C, 2% DMSO significantly reduced the levels of 13 of the cytokines/chemokines. The two notable exceptions were interleukin-1 , the only analyte within this panel that is cleaved/matured in the inflammasome and m inflammatory protein , the only analyte tested that is a member of the C-C family of pro-inflammatory chemokines . Also of note, lower concentrations of DMSO actually promoted the expression of these two analytes, suggesting a potentially distinct effect of DMSO on different cell signaling pathways. Importantly, some analytes were far more sensitive to DMSO-induced inhibition. G-CSF and IFN, for example, were extremely sensitive, showing substantial reductions at 0.5% DMSO .

In Vivo Arthritis Model

Nature’s Healer: DMSO – Doctor’s Corner

Arthritis was induced in 1012 week old male C57BL/6 mice by two intraperitoneal injections of 100 L of K/BxN serum on days 0 and 2 . One day before the initial IP injection of K/BxN serum, the hind paws of the mice were dipped for 30 s per paw in a 70% DMSO/30% autoclaved water solution . Hind paws were fully immersed up to the ankle fur line using a 50 mL falcon tube lid filled to capacity. The thickness of hind ankle and fore paws was measured daily using a dial thickness gauge . At the same time, a clinical score for each paw was assigned as previously described with slight modifications: 0 = no sign of swelling, 1 = mild swelling and/or redness, 2 = swelling of ankle and midfoot/paw, 3 = swelling involving the whole joint and midfoot/paws, and 4 = severe swelling encompassing the ankle, foot/paw and fingers/toes. Daily clinical score and ankle thickness measurements of the hind and/or fore paws were summed up together and compared to baseline scores/measurements. On day 7, mice were euthanized by CO2 asphyxiation. Plasma was collected immediately after sacrifice by cardiac puncture using a syringe containing 20 L of 0.5 M EDTA. The skin covering the joints was removed and whole joints were snap-frozen in dry ice and stored at -80°C for later analysis or fixed for histology as described below.

What Is Dmso Used For

DMSO is an exceptionally versatile therapy. For starters, its one of the few compounds that can be administered orally, topically, and through injection of both the vein and the muscle. The results of thousands of studies attesting to its health-promoting properties strongly support the view that DMSO is a truly significant therapeutic anti-inflammatory and that holds promise in managing a wide range of debilitating conditions:

Arthritis – With its ability to penetrate tissues, DMSO shows value in reducing pain and inflammation in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and possibly even gout.

Atherosclerosis – In laboratory tests, DMSO has demonstrated its ability to delay the development of atherosclerosis induced by dietary cholesterol, as well as suppress the accumulation of cholesterol in tissues, despite severely elevated levels.

Drug extravasation injury – Extravasation refers to the escape of a drug into the extravascular space , either by leakage from a vessel or by direct infiltration. When chemotherapy drugs leak into surrounding tissues , the effects can be severely damaging. Many studies have shown that DMSO application has significantly improved extravasation tissue injury in affected patients.

Herpes – DMSO has been used to enhance penetration of alpha-interferon ointment in the treatment of herpes.

Interstitial cystitis – Instilling DMSO in the urinary bladder is an FDA-approved pain-relieving treatment for this chronic inflammatory condition.

Why Is Organic Sulphur So Important

What More Can Dmso Do

DMSO also has wide-ranging applications that go beyond the control of inflammation:

Enhancement of drug action. When DMSO penetrates the skin and other membranes, it can readily carry many types of complex molecules with itand that capability is often harnessed to help carry other drugs deeper into the targeted tissues. For treating sore muscles, we just add DMSO to dexamethasone or prednisolone or any other drug we want to get inside the tissues as an anti-inflammatory, says Fleming. When you rub those drugs over the skin they only work topically, but if you add DMSO to them, they go into the tissues and work better.

DMSO can also carry other drugs into tissues that are otherwise difficult to penetrate. For example, some skin infections, such as ringworm, rainrot or scratches can be hard to treat because the infective organisms can be deep under the skin or crusty scurf. DMSO can help other antifungal or antibacterial drugs reach their targets more effectively.

Not all drugs work well with DMSO, depending on their molecular weight, shape and electrochemistry. And DMSO will not carry bacteria or viruses across cell membranes because they are too large.
