Is Cryotherapy Good For Rheumatoid Arthritis

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis

Fight Rheumatoid Arthritis Pain with Cryotherapy

A chronic inflammatory disorder affecting many joints, including those in the hands and feet. In rheumatoid arthritis, the bodys immune system attacks its own tissue, including joints. In severe cases, it attacks internal organs. Rheumatoid arthritis affects joint linings, causing painful swelling. Over long periods of time, the inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis can cause bone erosion and joint deformity.

Inflammatory And Antioxidant Status Assessment

A comparison of blood biochemical parameters assessed in both the experimental and the CGs before and after 2 weeks of WBC are presented in Table 5. There were no significant differences between-collection time and between-groups in hs-CRP, IL-6, IL-10, NO, and antioxidative statusindex .

Table 5 Biochemical results in blood before and after WBC : hsCRP, TAS, IL-6, IL-10, and NO in experimental and CGs.

If You Are Having Repeated Attacks See Your Doctor

Some patients can go a long time between attacks. In fact, for 62 percent of patients the next attack will be more than a year away, and some wont have another attack in the next 10 years. However, if you begin to have more frequent attacks, talk to your doctor about escalating treatment. People think its normal to have flares every now and then, but its not. The gout can be doing damage to your joints. It means you still have too much uric acid, says Shakouri. In particular, ask about allpurinol. It wont help with an acute attack but will help prevent future attacks by reducing uric acid production.

When To Use Heat To Treat Arthritis Pain

Therapeutic Heat is more commonly recommended for arthritis pain because it relaxes tendons and ligaments thereby increasing flexibility and decreasing pain. Heat also increases blood flow and improves joint range of motion.

So why the debate over hot or cold? Dr. Sperber says that for acute injuries just about everyone recommends ice, but for chronic conditions, like arthritis, both cold and heat can help reduce inflammation, so it may come down to whichever feels better to you.

As for how heat should be used, there are competing problems. The trick is to get enough heat into the tissue, for long enough, without burning your skin. For example, hands heat up fairly easily because the tissue is not deep, but for deep tissue pain, in the hip for instance, you may need to apply a lower temperature for a longer time. There are specific products that address these issues and each product comes with recommended time usage guidelines.

Most Popular Cold Therapy Products:

  • Frozen Gel Cold Packs. Save your frozen peas and use a pliable, reusable ice pack instead. ColPaC makes them in lots of sizes and shapes. Keep ice packs in the freezer and theyll be ready whenever you have a flare-up. Remember to use layers of dry terry toweling between the cold pack and your skin.
  • Biofreeze. This topical pain reliever is highly recommended for temporary relief of arthritis, tendonitis and fybromyalgia. You can order it in a tube, roll-on, spray or gel pump.

Fda Calls Bs On Spa Industry’s Cryotherapy Claims

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has deemed whole-body cryotherapy a shamand a risky one at that. In a new consumer update, the federal agency warns of the dangers of the “so-called ‘treatment,'” offered at spas and wellness centers, that involves exposing one’s legs, torso, and sometimes head to air chilled by liquid nitrogen to subzero temps .

Proponents say that whole-body cryotherapy not only supercharges metabolism, it’s also an effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, depression, anxiety, migraines, fibromyalgiathe list goes on and on. The FDAs response to those claims: Don’t believe everything you read.

Based on purported health benefits seen in many promotions for cryotherapy spas, consumers may incorrectly believe that the FDA has cleared or approved WBC devices as safe and effective to treat medical conditions, said Aron Yustein, MD, a medical officer in the agency’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “That is not the case.”

The trouble is, there’s no good research on what exactly happens inside the body in extreme temperatures. “We simply don’t know,” FDA scientific reviewer Anna Ghambaryan, MD, PhD, said in the statement. The risks of WBC, however, are clear. Aside from the obvious hazards , asphyxiation can occur when nitrogen vapors reduce the amount of oxygen in an enclosed room.

Use Heat To Treat Chronic Stiffness In Arthritic Joints

Heat encourages blood vessels near the surface of the skin to expand, increasing blood flow and relaxing muscles. When you wake up with sore joints, or if you feel stiff after a period of inactivity, a heating pad or a hot shower or bath will stimulate blood flow to your joints and help to make them feel more limber. A heat treatment is also a great way to prepare arthritic joints for exercise or activity.

What Applications And Benefits Does Cryotherapy Have

Sports Professional and recreational athletes, bodybuilders and regular exerciser use cryotherapy as a way to speed up muscle recovery after exercise, reduce delayed onset muscular soreness and increase performance. By exposing the body to extreme cold temperatures for a short period of time the speed at which oxygen-rich blood flows back through the muscles is significantly increased. This is a safe and natural way to reduce inflammation and accelerate the healing process of damaged soft tissue and sore joints. Athletes have easily taken to the idea of the approach as an improvement on the ice plunge. The benefits appear to be greater, while the treatment duration and discomfort is less.

Pain Management cryotherapy has been proved to be quite effective in the treatment of acute and chronic pain. This safe and natural treatment has been shown to help with Rheumatoid arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Tendinopathy, Post-surgical rehabilitation, Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis, Multiple sclerosis and general joint pain.

Wellness Cryotherapy involves the release of feel-good hormones which can leave you feeling a sense of euphoria for hours after treatment. This release of endorphins increases the energy level and reduces stress. It generates a relaxing effect and assists to improve issues such as Insomnia, stress, anxiety and depression.

Cryotherapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis at Cryo Club Atlanta

Daniel Muller, MD, a rheumatologist at UCHealth in Fort Collins, Colorado, and a coauthor of the book Integrative Rheumatology, says its unlikely that severe negative effects would result in people with RA from the few minutes of exposure.

For most people, he says, the biggest risk is likely to your wallet, since most cryotherapy treatment centers recommend you go several times a week for an extended period of time, and the payments will add up fast.

People with severe Raynaud’s syndrome, a comorbid condition to rheumatoid arthritis, in which small blood vessels in the fingers or toes constrict when exposed to cold, should probably stay away, Dr. Muller advises.

Cryo For Rheumatoid Arthritis

The benefits of cryotherapy for those living with rheumatoid arthritis, include improved range of motion, reduction in pain and inflammatory markers and reduced medicinal intake. These results combined with an improvement in general well-being has seen cryotherapy become a widely recognised treatment option for rheumatoid arthritis.

In fact, the development of cryotherapy began as a therapy for people living with arthritis. In the 1970s, a rheumatologist recognised the benefit cryo principles had for his patients and went on to develop cryotherapy.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune and chronic degenerative condition with no known cure. It is one of the most severe forms of arthritis and can lead to long-term joint damage and disability. Therefore, the goal of treatment is to delay progression and decrease symptoms. For those that suffer from the condition, knowing that this is a life long illness can often be difficult to swallow. Should You Use Ice Or Heat For Joint Pain

1 Minute Read

Medically Reviewed by UPMC Orthopaedic Care

Whether arthritis or injury is causing your joint discomfort, youve probably received varying and maybe even contradictory advice on how to manage it at home. Hot and cold therapy are two of the most common treatments for joint relief but when should each of them be used? Heres how to know whether to use ice or heat for joint pain.

The appropriate treatment for pain depends on its source. Joint pain may be the result of:

  • An injury, such as a sprain, strain, or fracture.
  • A viral infection.

Arthritis, one of the most common causes of joint discomfort, encompasses more than 100 conditions. Among the most typical forms are:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks healthy joint tissue and causes inflammation.
  • Osteoarthritis deterioration of the cartilage that protects bones and joints.
  • Psoriatic arthritis which causes internal and external inflammation.
  • Gout a condition in which acid builds up in a joint and causes inflammation.

Gout Causes & Treatment

Cryotherapy: Whole Body & Localized Tulsa & Broken Arrow ...

Gout is a unique type of arthritis that is caused by needle-like crystals forming in your joints. We say unique because its disease process is very different from the wear-and-tear osteoarthritis, or any auto-immune arthritis types like rheumatoid arthritis where the bodys immune system mistakenly attacks its own joints.

Gout occurs when a high concentration of a substance called urate, or uric acid, accumulates in our blood and crystallises in the joints. Uric acid is a natural waste product in our body, but if our body cant clear it from our bodies fast enough or if were creating more uric acid than normal due to factors like our diet then the concentration in our body can spike.

If the crystals develop in the joints most often the joints in the feet and most commonly the big toe joint this is known as a gout flare and brings with it severe pain and swelling.

The Donts Of Applying Cold Packs For Arthritis

  • Cold application is known to worsen the stiffness. Therefore, in general, cold packs should be in case of chronic muscle pain and on stiff joints.
  • Never use cold packs on a shivering or febrile person, even the one suffering from arthritic pain you may confuse the brain by sending wrong temperature signals, thus aggravating the already bad condition! Remember, the doctor said, use tap and NOT ice water for sponging your febrile sibling?

What Are The Downsides Of Whole Body Cryotherapy

While whole body cryotherapy is generally considered safe and few problems have been reported with its use, some people are advised to avoid WBC because it may worsen conditions such as

  • poorly controlled high blood pressure
  • major heart or lung disease
  • poor circulation
  • allergy symptoms triggered by cold
  • neuropathy in the legs or feet.

Local irritations, including skin burns, have been reported, although these should be avoidable with proper preparation.

Perhaps the biggest downside is cost. While first visits may be offered at a discount, a single session may run $20 to $80, and a course of treatment can cost several hundred dollars .

Health benefits aren’t proven, and trendy treatment carries risk of injury

HealthDay Reporter

FRIDAY, July 8, 2016 — Whole body cryotherapy — a trendy treatment that has been used for everything from arthritis pain to Alzheimer’s — may pose serious health risks, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns.

“Based on purported health benefits seen in many promotions for cryotherapy spas, consumers may incorrectly believe that the FDA has cleared or approved devices as safe and effective to treat medical conditions,” Dr. Aron Yustein, a medical officer in the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, said in an agency news release. “That is not the case.”

Cryotherapy involves freezing abnormal tissue it is often used to kill early skin cancers, according to the U.S. National Cancer Institute.

During whole body cryotherapy, the entire body is enclosed in a chamber and exposed to cold vapors for several minutes. The vapors are generated by liquid nitrogen and can reach ultra-low temperatures, the FDA said.

The benefits of whole body cryotherapy are still under investigation, although proponents claim it can ease symptoms of fibromyalgia, migraines, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, stress, anxiety or chronic pain.

But the FDA says there are many risks associated with the treatment.

“Potential hazards include asphyxiation, especially when liquid nitrogen is used for cooling,” said FDA scientific reviewer Dr. Anna Ghambaryan.

Cryotherapy: Understanding What It Is And Who Could Benefit From It

Cryotherapy is a dry and cold air therapy, free of excess moisture. The temperatures reached during a therapy session are between -200°F and -240°F. While such frigid temperatures would be dangerous in any other environment, dry air does not penetrate the body like the moisture in cold air.

In theory, the hyper-cooled air triggers the bodys natural healing mechanisms, sending your blood away from extremities to the body’s core and accelerating your white blood cell delivery and healing process by nearly 50%. Additionally, the brain releases adrenaline, endorphins, and other hormones, helping to regulate the organs. During the two-to-three-minute session, your body will experience an energy increase, self-healing, and an immune system boost.

According to experts in the field, a whole-body cryotherapy session increases nutrient flow, removes toxins, and helps repair soft tissue and joints. The potential benefits of cryotherapy make it beneficial for athletes and any number of patients suffering from inflammatory conditions or even psychological issues. The treatment is often touted as an anti-inflammation therapy.

Level Of Depressive Symptoms
