Preparing To See Your Doctor

Before you go to the doctor, it can be helpful to write down your symptoms and any patterns that you have noticed.

These questions can help you prepare to see your doctor:

  • What does your pain feel like? is it sharp or dull? Aching or stabbing? Do you get pins and needles? Does the painwake you up?
  • When does your pain increase? – does it get worse after you have been active, for example, cleaning the house, ordoing the gardening? Does it get worse if you have been sitting or lying still for a while, for example, sitting at the computer orreading a book?
  • Have you noticed anything that helps to make the pain better? – for example, taking a warm shower, catching up with friendsor doing activities you enjoy?
  • Does your joint stiffness change throughout the day? – is it worse in the morning, or does it stay the same throughout theday?

Keeping a pain diary can be a really helpful way tosee any patterns in your symptoms so you can better inform your doctor. In apain diary, you record things that might impact on your level of pain. You rate your pain on a scale of 0 10, and then rate yoursleep, mood and level of physical activity as well. It is ideal to do this a few times a day, so you can really get a sense of anypatterns.

Other Possible Causes Of Hand Pain

Hand pain is also a sign of Dupuytrens contracture, a condition in which the tissue of the palm and fingers becomes thickened and tight, causing the fingers to curl inward. Its not clear why Dupuytrens contracture develops, though those who smoke, drink a lot of alcohol, and have seizures or diabetes are more vulnerable to developing it.

Your doctor will also consider whether your hand pain could be due to carpal tunnel syndrome, says Dr. Byram. RA can be a cause of carpal tunnel syndrome, so if we see someone who has carpal tunnel, well want to make sure they dont have RA. Carpal tunnel is a condition that occurs when one of the major nerves to the hand the median nerve is squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Exercise For Arthritis In The Neck

How Can You Tell If You Have Arthritis

Physical therapy

If youre experiencing neck pain due to arthritis, your doctor may recommend physical therapy. Physical therapy for neck arthritis entails doing specific exercises to help strengthen and stretch weak or strained muscles. Physical therapy can improve range of motion. Sessions and programs vary in length and frequency and are tailored to your condition.

The foundation of what were trying to do in physical therapy for the neck is often to help improve posture and the way people move, says Dr. Milani. Exercises in physical therapy tend to be focused on strengthening muscles of the back and neck, which puts less strain on structures of the cervical spine.

Youll do exercises during physical therapy and get instructions on ones to do at home.

Regular Physical Activity at Home

You may feel like you dont want to move when your neck hurts. But being inactive may increase stiffness, which can cause you to lose even more mobility. Aches and pains tend to respond better to continued movement than rest, says Dr. Milani. Exercise is often the foundation of treatment.

Exercises that involve stretching, strengthening, and improving range of motion can help reduce pain and keep your neck limber. You want to move gently and smoothly when doing neck exercises, not jerk your neck or make sudden movements. You may feel discomfort at first. Stop if any exercise increases your neck pain.

Diagnosing Foot & Ankle Arthritis

Arthritis refers to inflammation in the joints that results in joint damage. There are many types of arthritis that develop for different reasons, but nearly all cause pain and stiffness in the affected joints, which can limit movement. Arthritis can involve physical changes in the tissues that make up a joint, including cartilage, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones. For example, if the smooth material that lines and protects the joints and cushions the bones, called cartilage, is damaged, the bones may rub directly against one another. This increased friction may cause hard growths called osteophytes or bone spurs to develop, causing increased pain and interfering with joint movement.

Arthritis may affect one or more of the 33 joints in the foot and ankle. These joints allow the foot and ankle to be flexible and to absorb the weight of the body during movement. People with foot or ankle arthritis may experience pain and discomfort when standing, walking, participating in sports, or performing other physical activities.

Foot and ankle arthritis pain often follows a recognizable pattern. People tend to feel aching pain and stiffness after a period of inactivity, as when getting up in the morning or rising from a chair after sitting for an hour or more. Walking and other everyday movements may help relieve this start-up discomfort, but arthritis pain usually returns after prolonged activity.

Rheumatoid Arthritis In The Neck

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease where the bodys immune system mistakenly attacks the lining of the joints. It often starts in the smaller joints of your hands and feet and can spread to other parts of the body like the neck as the disease progresses. This typically doesnt happen until years after the onset of arthritis symptoms.

Neck pain is the primary symptom of rheumatoid arthritis in the neck, with the severity varying from person to person. You may feel a dull or throbbing ache in the back of your neck around the base of the skull. Joint swelling and stiffness can make it hard to move from side to side.

The difference between rheumatoid arthritis neck pain and a neck injury is that stiffness and pain from an injury can gradually improve over days or weeks. Rheumatoid arthritis in the neck may not get better it can worsen if left untreated. Even if symptoms improve, inflammation, swelling, and stiffness can return with rheumatoid arthritis in the neck.

Which Joints In The Hand Are Affected

The index and middle fingers and the thumb are the parts of the hand most commonly affected. Many people find that the hand they use most is affected more than the other.

When the fingers are affected, it may be in the joints closest to the fingernails or the ones in the middle of the fingers. Its less common to have osteoarthritis in the large knuckle joints, where the fingers meet the hand.

The joint at the base of the thumb can also be affected by osteoarthritis. And occasionally the wrist joint may be affected.

How do I determine if I have arthritis?

Sometimes things happen that modern medicine just cant explain yet. As frustrating as that is, ambiguity is something that Alison M., 52, of New York, has learned to live with. Its been over 20 years and I am still waiting for my definitive diagnosis, she says. She was diagnosed with rheumatoid-like arthritis after showing autoimmune symptoms in high school. But her disease didnt present in the usual way and normal RA drugs didnt help. Even though she saw many doctors and tried every arthritis medication available, she ended up with a double hip replacement at age 25. Over the next couple of decades she had more joint surgeries than she can count but still no real answers. I have seen several rheumatologists, a joint specialist and more than five orthopedic doctors, she says. None of them can figure out exactly what is wrong with me or how to treat it. It is very frustrating!

Gout And Calcium Crystal Diseases

Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis that can cause painful swelling in joints. It typically affects the big toe, but it can also affect other joints in the body.

Joints affected by gout can become red and hot. The skin may also look shiny and can peel.

Its caused by having too much urate, otherwise known as uric acid, in the body. We all have a certain amount of urate in our body.

However, being overweight or eating and drinking too much of certain types of food and alcoholic drinks can cause some people to have more urate in their bodies. The genes you inherit can make you more likely to develop gout.

If it reaches a high level, urate can form into crystals that remain in and around the joint. They can be there for a while without causing any problems and even without the person realising they are there.

A knock to a part of the body or having a fever can lead to the crystals falling into the soft part of the joint. This will cause pain and swelling.

There are drugs that can reduce the amount of urate in the body and prevent gout attacks. Examples are allopurinol and . If youre having a gout attack, youll also need short-term pain relief. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as well as paracetamol can be good drugs to try first.

Men can get gout from their mid-20s, and in women its more common after the menopause. Taking water tablets can increase the risk of gout.

There are also conditions that cause calcium crystals to form in and around joints.

Coping With Low Mood And Sleep Problems

Living with pain can affect your mood and sleep, and its normal to feel low from time to time. If this is something that affects you, try going along to a pain clinic, where you can learn how to manage your pain. Pain can be affected by different things, including feeling low or stressed. There are a number of talking therapies and techniques you can learn, which can help you manage your pain, support your emotional wellbeing, and deal with any low feelings you might have. Mindfulness and cognitive behavioural therapy can help with osteoarthritis.

Learning to relax your muscles can also help, particularly if you have neck pain and are feeling stressed, as this can cause your muscles to become more tense.

A pillow thats too firm or thick can make neck pain worse. Try to sleep with your head level to the rest of your body. Its important to have a mattress that gives your head and spine proper support.

Try having a hot bath, reading a book, or listening to the radio or a relaxation CD to wind down before bed. If pain is waking you during the night, try taking paracetamol or another painkiller before bed. Talk to your doctor or a sleep expert for more advice.

Difference Between Osteoarthritis And Rheumatoid Arthritis

There are several different types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are two of the most common forms. Although the symptoms of these two types of arthritis can be similar, it’s very important to distinguish between them in order to determine the proper treatment.

At the University of Michigan Health System, our experienced rheumatologists will do appropriate tests to determine which type of arthritis you have. Then we will develop an effective treatment plan and will explain your options.
