One blood test measures levels of rheumatoid factors in the blood. Rheumatoid factors are proteins that the immune system produces when it attacks health tissue.
About half of all people with rheumatoid arthritis have high levels of rheumatoid factors in their blood when the disease starts, but about 1 in 20 people without rheumatoid arthritis also test positive.
A related blood test known as anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide test is also available. Anti-CCPs are antibodies also produced by the immune system.
People who test positive for anti-CCP are very likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis, but not everybody with rheumatoid arthritis has this antibody.
Those who test positive for both rheumatoid factor and anti-CCP may be more likely to have severe rheumatoid arthritis requiring higher levels of treatment.
Ways To Alleviate Spine Pain Or Disability
Minor pain and stiffness of mild PsA can be alleviated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs . In addition, injections of corticosteroids may be used.1
For moderate to severe disease, treatments that target joint disease in PsA can reduce symptoms and prevent disease progression. Recommended treatments include disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs . Non-biologic DMARDs, such as methotrexate, leflunomide, or sulfasalazine, have demonstrated efficacy for peripheral arthritis but not for axial disease. Biologic DMARDs that have proven effective in clinical trials include ustekinumab , brodalumab , and secukinumab . Other DMARDs target tumor necrosis factor , a chemical that produces a wide range of inflammation in PsA. Examples of TNF blockers include etanercept , adalimumab , infliximab , golimumab , and certolizumab pegol . 4 The FDA has also recently approved Inflectra , a biosimilar to infliximab, for the treatment of PsA.5
Physical and occupational therapy can also be critical treatment approaches to both protect the involved joints and maintain function.1
Who Needs A Test
PsA can affect anyone. It develops most frequently in young adults, but it can appear at any age.
People with psoriasis or a family history of psoriasis are more likely to develop PsA and should be aware of the symptoms.
If someone develops arthritis symptoms and has either psoriasis or a family history of it, they should ask a doctor whether their symptoms could result from PsA or another autoimmune inflammatory disorder.

What Is It Like To Get An X
Your primary care physician or rheumatologist may order X-rays if they believe you have psoriatic arthritis. Getting an X-ray for PsA is like an X-ray for any other condition.
Most X-rays dont require special preparation. Before your X-rays, you will be asked to remove any metal items, as these could interfere with the X-ray machine. Its a good idea to leave items like jewelry or watches at home.
Once its time for your X-ray, youll meet the technician who will perform the procedure. You will put on protective gear so that other parts of your body are not exposed to the X-rays. Then, your technician will position your body in such a way that they can get the images your doctor or rheumatologist ordered. If you are in pain at any point, let them know, and they will do everything they can to make you as comfortable as possible.
When your body is in the correct position, your technician will leave the room so that they are not exposed to the X-rays. They will push a button to take the X-ray and return to reposition your body for another image, if needed. If not, they will remove your protective gear so you can leave.
The technician may be able to check the images to make sure theyre clear before you leave, so you dont have to come back because something was blurry. Your images will then be sent to a radiologist for evaluation. The radiologist will notify your doctor of the results, and your doctor will contact you to discuss the results and next steps.
How Do You Prove Arthritis
Your doctor will evaluate your symptoms, do a physical exam to look for swollen joints or lack of mobility, and utilize blood tests and X-rays to confirm the diagnosis. X-rays and blood tests can also be used to determine the type of arthritis you have. The three most common types are osteoarthritis, which is the most common form of arthritis rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis .
In addition to the diagnostic tests mentioned above, your doctor may also ask you about your history of joint problems, as well as other illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. This information will help your doctor identify any potential causes for your pain or stiffness.

What Happens During A Knee X
A radiologic technologist will perform your knee X-ray in your healthcare providers office or a hospital radiology department. The procedure will take place in a room with a large X-ray machine hanging from the wall or ceiling. Once in the X-ray room, you may be given a lead apron to protect you from radiation exposure. The X-ray room is sometimes set at a cold temperature, but the process should only last about 10 minutes. An X-ray is like getting a picture of your knee taken you cant feel it, and it produces an image.
Your technologist will place an X-ray film holder or digital recording plate behind or under the X-ray machine. Theyll have you stand or sit in front of the X-ray machine or have you lie down on an X-ray table. Youll need to keep very still during the procedure. Any movement may cause the X-ray images to show up blurry. The technologist may ask you to hold your breath while theyre taking the images.
Your technologist will go into a small room or behind a wall to operate the X-ray machine. Theyll return to reposition you for additional images. Sometimes, they may have you bend your knee or knees in certain ways as well.
Is Your Treatment Working
In recent years, there has been increasing emphasis on using objective scores to monitor disease activity and decide when and if you need a change in treatment to bring RA under control. Although not always needed, ultrasound and MRI can help with those decisions.
If your joints are tender and swollen and levels of inflammatory markers are elevated, your doctor doesnt need modern imaging to know you arent doing well and its time to adjust your treatment, says Dr. Conaghan.
For tracking joint damage, plain X-rays are still useful if your doctor can examine changes in your films over time, Dr. Conaghan adds.Surprisingly, patients who seem to be doing well on a treatment may benefit most from modern imaging.
After several months on a DMARD or biologic, a patient may be asymptomatic but you can tell the disease is not under control if you still see a thickened synovial lining with power Doppler, says Dr. Machado.
Because inflammation doesnt entirely disappear even on the best therapy, a number of large studies are currently tracking patients progress over time to help determine what a safe level of imaging-visualized inflammation would be.. These studies should also help us understand how to use these modern tools in everyday practice, says Dr. Conaghan.
On a different research front, the biggest impact of modern imaging may be in streamlining clinical trials of new treatments.
