  • Key features: Long sessions of computer or console gaming can cause cramping in your hands. Gaming gloves may provide relief, but its essential to find gloves that still allow for freedom of movement and that dont turn your hands into a sweaty, uncoordinated mess. These gloves are meant to improve your grip for a better gaming performance while keeping cramping and sweaty fingers from becoming an issue. They also have hand wrist padding, which can make gaming sessions at a keyboard more comfortable, and theyre machine-washable.
  • Considerations: These gloves are fingerless, so you may still get sweaty on your fingertips while youre gaming. Theyre marketed for use for PC, but should also work great for console gaming. Youll also want to be aware that these gloves offer less compression than some other options on this list, which makes them ideal for the finger movements required in gaming but might not help with conditions like arthritis.

Do Copper Bracelets Help Ease Arthritis

Copper: An ancient medicine

Copper was the first metal ever used by humans. Middle Eastern artisans of the 5th and 6th millennia B.C. fashioned this lustrous, orange-red element into:

  • jewelry
  • utensils
  • weapons

Besides being useful as a metal, copper also kills or inhibits the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms. The Edwin Smith Papyrus, one of the oldest books ever discovered, records the use of copper to sterilize chest wounds and drinking water. This book was written sometime between 2600 B.C. and 2200 B.C.

Copper is present in the human body as a mineral in trace amounts. It helps the body use iron and supports nerve function. According to the Copper Development Association, copper is essential for the following bodily functions:

  • iron utilization

Copper is found in many foods, including:

  • nuts

How Arthritis Gloves Work

How Arthritis (Compression) Gloves Work

Arthritis gloves may work through several mechanisms. Thermal gloves warm the hand, which can make you feel very comfortable and even take away some of the pain, says Karen Jacobs, EdD, OT, OTR, CPE, FAOTA, a clinical professor at Boston University and an occupational therapist who works with arthritis patients.

Others are compression gloves that provide pressure. Particularly when youre having a flare in the fingers and joints and just feeling really uncomfortable, the compression seems to help reduce the swelling and can help with some joint stiffness as well, says Jacobs. Compression may also improve blood circulation. Overall, arthritis gloves can make patients feel more relaxed and calm with a reduction in symptoms.

Dangers Of Copper Gloves

There are a few conditions or instances where wearing copper compression gloves can actually worsen your well being or cause harm. For example, if you have dysfunctional arteries, the compression can limit blood flow rather than improve it. Compression gloves can also worsen nerve dysfunction and lead to a greater risk of injury. Furthermore, some wounds or injuries may persist for longer than they should when copper compression gloves are used. This is because by covering the wound with restrictive material you are potentially preventing or delaying it from healing properly.

If you are experiencing any of these conditions or problems, be sure to speak with your health care professional before trying copper infused gloves to treat your hand pain and related problems.

What Studies Say About Arthritis Gloves

Unfortunately, there isnt a whole lot of science behind the gloves yet, anyway. So far, studies have been inconclusive in proving that arthritis gloves actually improve symptoms. But anecdotally, many arthritis patients who use them have found relief. I love my gloves and swear by them, Tien Sydnor-Campbell, who lives with rheumatoid arthritis, told us on Facebook. Another arthritis patient, Sue Fundakowski, told us, I wear them at night when I cant sleep because my hands hurt too much. Helps a lot!

As a professional OT, Jacobs says she will advise patients to wear arthritis gloves. Occupational therapists sometimes do recommend gloves and thats very appropriate, she says. If someone is saying, Im having a lot of pain and discomfort but I want to keep typing on the computer or I want to continue playing squash or racquetball or tennis or I want to keep gardening, the gloves may help them continue doing everyday activities and hobbies they enjoy.

Retrieved studies were screened independently by the first author using titles of papers and abstracts. Once relevant studies were identified, the full publication was retrieved and reviewed independently by the second author to determine the suitability based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria identified. Any conflicts were resolved through the review conducted by the third author.

For selection criteria, the studies were considered if glove or glove-splint was used as a therapy treatment. However, studies using splint only were not considered for this review. Only studies carried out on adults aged 18 years and older were considered for this review. Studies involving patients with any type of arthritis were included if at least one of the participants of the considered study was a patient with RA. Studies which included at least one measure from the following outcome measures were considered for inclusion in this review: grip strength, pinch strength, ROM, dexterity, hand pain, finger swelling, joint stiffness.

Methodological quality approach was not adopted in this review for statistically segregating the quality of the clinical trials due to the limited number of studies. This review covers all types of study designs, including uncontrolled studies and case studies. The PEDro methodological quality discussed in the results section was based on the data extracted from the PEDro database.

What The Research Shows

While we know that copper plays a role in several vital bodily functions, theres little research specifically about copper for arthritis treatment. There are even fewer that explore the usefulness of wearing copper in bracelet form for arthritis relief.

One 2013 study looked at the effects of several wearable devices, including copper bracelets, for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The study followed 65 participants who self-reported their results. The study found that none of the devices had a statistically significant effect in reducing arthritis symptoms.

People didnt experience better physical function or lower medication use when wearing any of the devices. Researchers concluded that copper bracelets dont have any meaningful effect, except perhaps a limited placebo effect, on rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.

A placebo effect happens when someone is undergoing treatment or taking a drug experiences positive effects that arent the result of the medication or therapy. They’re instead due to a persons belief that the treatment is effective.

Some older studies also look at the effects of applying topical copper gels, but again theres no evidence that these provide any benefits.

Copper May Relieve Arthritis Pain

Some companies claim that copper bracelets and other copper items can reduce joint pain and stiffness from rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis.

If you have fibromyalgia, arthritis or all-over body aches, copper-infused bed sheets or pajamas are available. And if your best friend is equally arthritic, try this dog bed for him.

Copper Bracelets Dont Help Rheumatoid Arthritis

Sept. 18, 2013 â Copper bracelets and magnetic wrist straps have no real effect on pain and swelling in rheumatoid arthritis, a new study finds. They also seem to have no effect in preventing the disease from getting worse.

The practice of wearing copper bracelets to help RA has been popular since the 1970s. Belief in the healing power of magnets and the practice of wearing magnetic objects to help symptoms of arthritis is a centuries-old tradition.

Itâs estimated that more than $1 billion worth of magnetic devices are sold annually worldwide, despite the fact little research has been done to gauge how well the treatments work.
