Acupuncture And Physiotherapy At Oakwood Physio Clinic
Acupuncture treatment at Oakwood Physiotherapy Clinic is sometimes combined with heat treatment which is a lovely warm relaxing experience. We may use a heat lamp to gently warm the area. In Chinese medicine this treatment of gently warming the needles and the painful area can be very helpful for patients who feel more pain in the cold and who instinctively like to wrap up super warmly.
Because people are generally delighted how little sensation there is from the acupuncture needles, many recommend it to their friends and families once they have seen the benefits.
Other physiotherapy modalities will usually be added to the treatment such as professional advice and appropriate exercises.
No Two Patients Treated Alike
Acupuncture is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine, with a rich history and lineage dating back thousands of years. It involves inserting hair-thin needles into the body to promote pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects.
No two patients are treated alike. Some patients find relief with needles alone. Others need a more involved technique, such as electro-acupuncture .
Patients with knee arthritis respond particularly well to electro-acupuncture. When knee arthritis is mild or moderate, a limited number of sessions produce very good results. When arthritis is more advanced, or bone-on-bone, ongoing acupuncture is needed.
Acupuncture can also be combined with conventional treatments, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy and/or injections. In addition, acupuncture can provide short-term pain relief until knee replacement surgery is performed.

Meniscus Injuries And Tears
The meniscus of the knee is a crescent shaped fibrocartilaginous structure that provides a cushion on both sides of the knee between the femur and the bones of the lower leg. When torn, this structure causes pain and affects the range of motion at the knee. Surgical repair is a common solution. For minor tears, while healing is more time related due to very little blood flow into structures such as these, pain control is important to regain and then retain full range of motion. Acupuncture is very effective in this regard during the recovery phase.

Who Suffers From Knee Pain
Many athletes experience knee injuries, particularly to the knee ligaments. Nearly everyone has become familiar with the acronym ACL, which stands for anterior cruciate ligament. ACL tears can be caused by rapidly twisting or changing directions slowing down when running or landing from a jump. Injuries to the medial collateral ligament are usually caused by contact on the outside of the knee.
Knee pain isnt restricted to professional athletes, however. As people get older, the amount of cartilage in the knee decreases, and many ligaments begin to lose some of their elasticity, making them more susceptible to pain and/or injury.
Clinical And Laboratory Assessment
Assessments at baseline, 5, 10, 15, 20 weeks included clinical and laboratory assessment. Clinical assessment included visual analogue scale for pain , the number of swollen and tender joints, patient’s global assessment, a validated version of the Chinese Health Assessment Questionnaire and the physician’s global assessment which was done by a blinded physician who performed all examinations and assessments throughout the entire study period.
Laboratory assays including complete blood count, blood chemistry, urinalysis, and liver function tests, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein were performed at each visit and potential adverse events were assessed by using open-ended questions at each study visit.

For those who experience symptom relief, it is not possible to say how long the effects will last. A person can talk with their acupuncture practitioner about the likely treatment outcomes and whether there is anything that may help prolong the effects.
If acupuncture treatment is not having desirable effects, the practitioner may adjust the treatment plan accordingly.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Acupuncture For Arthritis
The use of acupuncture for arthritis has suffered a lot of criticism from the skeptics. However, there is some limited, but fairly strong evidence that it can help cure arthritis. Various studies have been conducted which show that acupuncture is very effective in dealing with arthritis pain without any side effects. The needles used to carry out the process are very easy to insert.
The people who practice the ancient technique of acupuncture have a considerable amount of knowledge about the various pressure points where a particular needle must be inserted so that the patient feels no pain.
The needles can be placed anywhere over the whole body. It is not necessary to insert the needle at the point where the pain is experienced. People who practice acupuncture may insert needles in a persons arms, legs, knees, shoulders, and elsewhere.
Focusing on these points has a great ability to reduce inflammation, and hence increase endorphins. All of this causes excellent relaxation in the body. People can even fall asleep during these sessions its that relieving.
Acupunture And Electroacupuncture For Rheumatoid Arthritis
Does acupuncture work for treating rheumatoid arthritis?
Two studies of low to medium quality were reviewed and provide the best evidence we have today. The studies tested 84 people who had rheumatoid arthritis. The studies compared acupuncture to a placebo or a steroid injection. Improvement was measured after one treatment or after five treatments given once per week.
What causes shoulder pain and how can acupuncture help?Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease in which the bodys immune system attacks its own healthy tissues. The attack happens mostly in the joints of the hands and feet and causes redness, pain, swelling and heat around the joints. Drug and non-drug treatments are used to relieve pain and/or swelling.
Acupuncture is a non-drug therapy being in which thin needles are inserted into the body at specific spots. It is thought that acupuncture works either by releasing chemical compounds in the body that relieve pain, by overriding pain signals in the nerves or by allowing energy or blood to flow freely through the body. It is not known whether acupuncture works or is safe.
What do the studies show?In one study, people had acupuncture or fake therapy for five weeks, once per week. Pain, number of swollen and tender joints, disease activity, overall well-being, lab results, or amount of pain medication needed was about the same whether they had acupuncture or fake therapy.
How safe is it?Side effects were not measured in the studies.

Acupuncture Helps Treat Arthritis Pain
According to the CDC, arthritis is a common health problem in the U.S., affecting more than 54 million people, with this number expected to rise to 78 million in the next 20 years. Among chronic diseases in the U.S., arthritis causes more disability than any other condition, including heart disease, diabetes, and back or spine problems. Rheumatoid arthritis is the third most common type of arthritis behind osteoarthritis and gout . RA affects More than 1.3 million in the U.S.
RA is defined as a chronic, long-term autoimmune disease, meaning your immune system begins to attack and damage healthy cells. This damage can lead to even worse symptoms. Most people assume RA is a disease impacting the joints, but there are other areas of the body that can be impacted as well. The progression of RA is different for each individual. Symptoms and treatment can vary from person to person depending on a variety of factors.
Most treatment options include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids, and various medications for pain relief. They can range from over-the-counter analgesics like Tylenol to prescription drugs like tramadol, codeine, oxycodone and hydrocodone. These drugs can have powerful side effects and there are those looking for non-pharmacological options. The good news is studies show that acupuncture can help treat arthritis pain.
What the Research Says

How Acupuncture Can Help Arthritis
Acupuncture treats the patient by addressing the whole body. When the body is out of balance, pain and illness can arise. Acupuncture works by increasing blood flow to the area, restoring function, and reducing inflammation. Studies show acupuncture can help relieve pain by improving the bodys nervous system, which can jumpstart the production of pain-reducing endorphins.

What Are Some Natural And Safe Treatment Options For People With Ra
There are so many natural things you can do to effectively control inflammation: Diet, staying active, controlling stress, and acupuncture.
The first being diet. Eating an anti-inflammatory diet can dramatically cut inflammation and lead to less joint inflammation, improved brain and cardiovascular health, and just overall wellness! The anti-inflammatory diet eliminates sugar, processed foods, sodas, and fried fatty foods and centers on a whole foods based diet. High quality proteins, veggies, low glycemic fruits, adequate water, and good fats.
Staying active is also beneficial at helping to promote healing and reducing RA symptoms. In fact, pain associated with RA often is worse after periods of inactivity. Exercise can also help to control stress. As we know now, stress is often the initial spark that fuels the inflammation. Therefore making daily mindset and stress reducing practices an integral part of your routine can help to keep stress and inflammation at bay. Consider activities such as yoga, mindfulness practices like meditation, and participating in group exercise activities.
Overview Of A Typical Acupuncture Session
During your first appointment, your practitioner will ask you questions to learn about your medical history, health, and lifestyle, as well as the condition you are there seeking treatment for.
Before your acupuncture session begins, you will be asked to lie down or sit in a chair, depending on where the needles will be placed. You may need to roll up your sleeves or pant legs to allow your acupuncturist to access the body parts where needles will be inserted.
The acupuncturist will wipe the areas where the needles will be inserted with disinfectant before inserting the needles. The practitioner will then insert the needles on various locations on your body, including on or around your knee.
You should feel minimal to no discomfort when the needles are inserted. Some people report feeling relaxed or even energized when the needles are inserted. You should not feel any soreness or pain during treatment unless you are moving during treatment or a needle is improperly placed.
The session may last anywhere from a few minutes up to 30 minutes or longer per treatment session.
In addition to traditional acupuncture, there are other acupuncture options you may be offered:
Electroacupuncture is a modified form of acupuncture that uses two needles . A mild electrical current passes between the two needles, which provides additional stimulation to the acupoints.
Can Acupuncture Help In Arthritis
Arthritis is a pervasive disease condition characterized by pain and inflammation in the joints.
The two main kinds of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
In certain cases, age and physical activity act as a trigger for the disease while in some other it arises as an auto-immune disorder.
A wide range of treatment options are available but all have certain ill-effects on prolonged exposure.
Thus patients of arthritis usually seek alternative therapies to cure their disease symptoms.
One such therapy finds its roots in China and the Far East and is commonly known as Acupuncture.

Should You Be Trying It
I want to go back to earlier on when we spoke about the psychological effects and the placebo effect.
I do believe that some scientists maybe underestimate the power and importance of the mind when it comes to clinical trials.
I also believe that healthy is our natural state and I believe it takes different factors and ingredients, to maintain the right balance for optimal health.
The factors include diet, exercise, avoidance of toxins for example from the environment and power of the mind.
Maybe we all underestimate the power of the mind.
For example, you cant think or wish yourself thin even if you read a book entitled that, you have to eat right to be thin as well.
The opposite is many people cant get thin just by eating right because there mind isnt backing them up.
The mind is saying you are starving, why are you doing this to yourself when you know how good burger and cake tastes.
This is where you can use the mentioned think yourself thin books, to strengthen your mind and improve your chances of keeping weight off.
In the same thought process, just because an expert tells you something is giving you no physiological benefit, does that mean the benefits you are feeling are a placebo or fake?
Or does it mean that it is giving you a psychological benefit and one that you vitally need?
People have a reluctance to accept or believe in something they cannot see, there is no evidence for and cant be measured.
Maybe it is actually strengthening your psyche.
Keep These Risk Factors In Mind
Although most of the effects of arthritis are completely positive and effective, there are very few risks involved with acupuncture. The potential benefits of acupuncture outweigh the risks. The risks associated with acupuncture are by far, less harmful than the ones related to mainstream medicines. If the treatment does not suit a person, he can experience the following:
- Slight soreness where the needles were placed
- Stomach upset
- Muscle twitching
- Heightened emotions
Moreover, it is not necessary that the acupuncture works for all. There are some cases in which acupuncture doesnt work for people, but such cases are rare. Moreover, people who are suffering from bleeding disorders may have problems as the needles may cause further infection. Some acupuncture treatments conducted on pregnant females resulted in early labor.
People with heart issues, and who have a pacemaker should be extremely cautious while using acupuncture as heat or electrical impulses can cause a problem with the pacemaker, and hence disturb the heart functioning.
Make sure that the acupuncturist uses only sterile needles. The needles which are not sterile can cause infection, since bacteria and viruses, and other microbes can get into a persons bloodstream. The needles should come prepackaged.
You just let someone stick pins in to you dont you?
Pretty much but for the sake of making this post longer, lets look deeper.
It isnt just a case of using your body as a human dart board though.
