These Foods May Help Ease Rheumatoid Arthritis
They’re among the foods that could ease the pain, swelling and stiffness in your joints and even slow progression of the disease, researchers say.
“Regular consumption of specific dietary fibers, vegetables, fruits and spices, as well as the elimination of components that cause inflammation and damage, can help patients to manage the effects of rheumatoid arthritis,” study author Bhawna Gupta said in a journal news release.
Gupta is an assistant professor in the School of Biotechnology at KIIT University in Odisha, India.
“Patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis should switch from omnivorous diets, drinking alcohol and smoking to Mediterranean, vegan, elemental or elimination diets, as advised by their doctor or dietitian,” Gupta said. An omnivorous diet includes foods from both plant and animal sources.
Incorporating probiotics — foods like yogurt and dietary supplements that contain beneficial microorganisms — can also help, she said.
Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis includes anti-rheumatic drugs, which can be costly.
Cherries And Cherry Juice For Arthritis Pain
Cherries and cherry juice have scientifically proven benefits for arthritis joint pain. Eating sweet or sour cherries or drinking cherry juice every day lowers inflammation in the body and reduces joint swelling and pain in arthritis, improving joint flexibility, mobility and functionality. These sleep-promoting benefits may be attributed to the fruits high concentration of plant compounds. Additionally, cherries contain melatonin, a substance that helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle .
A study in 20 people showed that those who drank tart cherry juice concentrate for 7 days experienced significant increases in melatonin levels, sleep duration, and sleep quality, compared to a placebo .
Similarly, a 2-week study in older adults with insomnia found that drinking 1 cup of tart cherry juice before bed increased sleep time by 84 minutes .
However, these studies use concentrated cherry products. Its unclear whether eating fresh cherries before bed would have the same effect.
Ultimately, more studies are needed to better understand how consuming cherries and cherry products may benefit sleep.

The purple carrot has its roots in Afghanistan, dating all the way back to the pre-900s, according to the Carrot Museum website. The carrots existed in Central Asia for several centuries before being brought to the west by Arabs in the 10th century. Modern orange carrots are believed to be derived from two distinct groups of carrots: the Eastern carrot, which is purple and yellow with branched root and the Western carrot which is yellow, orange, white, or red with unbranched root.

As the rats health began to deteriorate, the team began to incorporate purple carrot juice and their health began to improve.

The survey asked 300 participants about their symptom response to a list of 20 inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods. Foods considered “inflammatory” included red meat, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, diet soda, and beer, while fish, blueberries, strawberries, spinach, red wine, and chocolate have been popularly described as “anti-inflammatory.”
This was a survey of patients. It wasnt medically scientific in that they didnt examine patients, have them eat specific foods, then re-examine them or do extensive lab tests. They simply asked RA patients how the foods affected their symptoms. Its doubtful that all of the patients ate all 20 foods on the list so the answers are no doubt skewed a bit toward the more popular/accessible items. All this being said, the 300 respondents are enrolled in the Brigham RA Sequential Study, so there is every reason to have confidence in their answers. There were additional questions about lifestyle and things like vitamin supplements, but the main focus was on how food connected to RA symptoms.
